What jacket or cardigan would work with this denim dress?

Ive bought a denim dress from M&S & Im not sure what jacket/cardigan to wear with it. Ideally it would be cropped or fitted so the dress & jacket don't drown me as I like the fitted look (oversized doesn't suit me).

(sorry for the really long link)

Im a size 16 pear shape & so pleased that Ive finally found a denim dress that looks good on me!

But, Im always cold so need to wear a jacket unless we're in some sort of heatwave as I hate feeling cold all the time. I'd usually wear a denim jacket with my dresses as that seems to go with most of my clothes but I don't want double denim so need advice on what I could pair with the dress.

Budget is up to £50 but could splash out more if it was something I could wear with other things too. Most of my summer dresses are black/Navy/Taupe but Id be happy to buy something more colourful if it suited the dress!

Thank you all

None. The sleeves won’t go into anything! They are quite voluminous. Sleeves like that make me look wide so I avoid. It’s dated, but try a shawl.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 01/04/2026 22:53

What about a quilted jacket?

Funkle · 01/04/2026 23:15

Could you wear a long sleeve top underneath? As I agree with the poster above about the sleeves being difficult to get into a jacket sleeve.

EleanorMc67 · 02/04/2026 02:02

Well, the sleeves are oversized so that does make things trickier if you want to keep things neat!

If the shape of the dress sleeves isnt visible under this cardigan, it might work? It's quite short but perhaps not as slimfit as you want.

Short & boxy but too lightweight?

This is really cute. If you ignore the word shrug! Sounds so dated ...

A dress with that style of sleeves is not meant to be worn under a jacket, @TheEasterBunny3.

I’d suggest you keep it for the hottest days and wear something else (with plain, narrow sleeves) when you need layers for warmth.

henlake7 · 02/04/2026 10:57

That is tricky, I think you want wide/balloon sleeves and quite a thick/structured knit because of the sleeves. Puff sleeves in denim probably wont smoosh down underneath anything too thin!
Looks like either suitable for hot days and no covering or colder days with a chunky cardie.

Exactly my thoughts when I was looking for options - but enunciated better!! Bonus points for the word "smoosh" ...!!!

MiddleAgedDread · 02/04/2026 11:22

this is what i don't understand about all these dresses with massive sleeves, great if the weather is warm but 9 times out of 10 it's not and you need something else over it!

ThatLimeBiscuit · 02/04/2026 11:24

I think you’d be better wearing a thermal vest/t shirt/bodysuit underneath? Or tie a jumper or cardi around your shoulders?

GinandGingerBeer · 02/04/2026 11:28

You need a fine merino knit under it. Cos do them- some plain some patterned. You can’t wear something over
even the kimonos as they’re too fine to wear over a puff sleeve. Have to say I have a similar one from scamp & dude and rarely wear it. It’s either too hot or too cold to wear it!

Daisymail · 02/04/2026 14:58

I imagine those sleeves would be too big to lay flat in a cardi or jacket.

TheEasterBunny3 · 02/04/2026 21:43

Thanks for your help everyone. Some of these look amazing & I would have never considered them before so will be looking to get more than one!

But, I think most of you are correct - Im going to have to save the dress for the hottest days as I don't think I will be able to wear something over it.

But the ideas you have given me will go well with some of my other clothes so this thread hasn't been wasted.

I bought this dress too. Planning on wearing a thin long sleeved top underneath until it’s warmer! It’s such a lovely dress, I was drawn to it and I don’t often wear dresses.

Denim4ever · 02/04/2026 22:50

Wrap, pashmina or quilted jacket. Maybe a collarless jacket Chanel style. That zip dictating the shaping and slit length at the bottom is your biggest enemy stylewise. Makes it much harder to carry off

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 03/04/2026 09:58

I'd wear a slightly oversized trench over that, although I realise that's not the look you are going for. You can't wear a neat, fitted cardigan or jacket over those sleeves, I'm afraid.

Doggymummar · 03/04/2026 15:33

The sleeves are the feature of the dress, I wouldn't be covering them
