Backpack, tote or crossbody: which bag style do you prefer?

Lighthearted fun thread.
Thanks to a completely unsaveable and broken bag (think leaked smoothie and a busted zip) I had to abandon my trusty backpack in paddington station yesterday and I had to decamp all my stuff into a tote bag. I then spent my day with one shoulder weighed down.
I love the look of tote bags and cross body bags but they make me feel lopsided and achey on one side. So lighthearted question: are you a backpack, tote or crossbody person? Or a combo of all three?

Cross body handbag, backpack for laptop

Backpack for the sake of my back.

Bags are a serious matter!

I no longer attempt backpacks, as I find, however heavy they may be, I only ever sling them over one shoulder, so they’re a bit pointless for me.

As I tend to spend a fair bit on individual garments, and iron them, I cannot see any benefit in a bag that’s going to ruin all my effort. So cross body bags have passed me by.

And now that I don’t have to drag a laptop around, I don’t need a tote bag.

So for me it’s either a straw basket for shopping, or a slinky evening bag. Or the inside pockets of my coat.

Cross body all the time, hands free and safer, cannot be pulled off the shoulder. I can shorten the strap if needed to put over shoulder for less "casual" occasions!

Backpack for shopping and travel.

Sparkly clutch or two for weddings/special occasions.

Cross body bag for every day, backpack for holidays. No evening bag as I don't go out very much

Tote/whatever you call a bag that you wear on one shoulder is my preference. I do have cross body bags like Pom Pom London, but prefer a big slouchy leather or suede tote to throw all my crap into.

Combination when going to work - backpack for the heavy stuff like laptop & lunch, with a small cross body bag for essentials like phone & purse so I’m not constantly taking the backpack off to get things out of it. Outside of commenting, either a tote or a cross body bag depending on where I’m going.

Well, tote bags slip off my slopey shoulders,
Backpacks leave me with a gross backpack shaped sweat patch on my back,
So it's cross body all the way!

When I go to the city, which is rare now, I use a back pack as I carry more stuff, and weight is evenly distributed.
Everywhere else I only use a cross-body bag: hands free, more comfortable, feels safer as some people, I've noticed, get careless with their totes, leaving them in the shopping cart while walking away to pick up an item. Besides, I don't like that lob- sided look from one arm always carrying a heavy tote bag.

Tote or small cross body. Faff to get into rucksacks/backpack. I don’t take a laptop around with me. I don’t like heavy bags and have a Gucci bamboo handle bag that’s very heavy even when empty!

FirstDayonthePlanet · 01/04/2026 23:13

Backpack for work (or when I need to carry anything heavier than phone/keys/purse).
technically a cross body otherwise, but in actual fact just phone/keys in pockets most of the time.

like a man I guess.

Shinyhappyapple · 02/04/2026 00:00

Cross body always. Then if I need to carry more stuff it’s a lightweight tote if I’m in a city or wearing a dress or a rucksack if I’m in very casual clothing. My purse and phone are always in my cross body bag though.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 02/04/2026 00:14

day To day I only use a crossbody bag I only change it if I’m going “out out” then I prefer a clutch bag but that’s a rare occurrence usually saved for events.
