Easy 80s party outfit and makeup ideas using what I own

ChocolateMunchBunch · 29/03/2026 20:20

Going to an 80s party next weekend and wondering how to do an 80s look without having to buy lots of stuff.

I have curly hair so reckon I can do something outrageously 80s with that! Was thinking about getting buy some big plastic earrings. .

any ideas for things I might already have in my wardrobe that I could tweak or accessorize? Makeup ideas?

I was born late 70s and I’m thinking early Madonna or bananarama as inspiration although the birthday girl was born in 86 so might go with something from that year.

slight complication: I’m not in the uk so can’t use vinted and I live rurally so with Easter it’s a bit tight for getting stuff delivered. Will go to local charity shop but would prefer not to have to buy too much.

any brilliant ideas?

Layered tank tops, tube skirt, ankle socks with lace tops and/or fishnets, fingerless lace gloves, cropped jean jacket, lots of bangle bracelets, pointy toed high heels, teased hair, red lips, lots of mascara.

I can picture this! I’d forgotten bout bangles and have a few so that’s an easy one, thanks. I think I’m going to have to buy clothes as I don’t think I have anything kicking about in my wardrobe that will fit the bill

Oh I’ve just remembered I have a pair of converse hi tops. I was wondering what to do for footwear so I’m glad you mentioned that. Thanks for ideas

Makeup: pink and blue eyeshadow. Pink on the lids and blue close to the lashes and in the crease of the lid. Blue mascara. Lip gloss, the glossier the better. Or pale shimmering pink lipstick. Blusher, lots of it worn in a stripe across the cheek bone. If you can get your hands on any body glitter put that in your cheeks too.
Hair, tie a plain black scarf around your head. Look at pictures of Simon le Bon and Madonna for the look. Back comb your hair and drench it in super hold hairspray.
Clothes: tube mini skirt with footless tights. Cropped top if you can get away with it. If not a big, baggy shirt with a belt around the waist. Fingerless lace gloves. White plastic stilettos, or shoes which look like a prince in a pantomime would wear. A long crucifix necklace, big earrings and as many bangles as you can fit onto your arm.
I actually wore all of this!

Early 80s was a “Lady Di” blouse with frilly neck, polka dots, big bows, pencil skirt, court shoes, burgundy.
Blue eyeliner and mascara.
Hair flicked back at the sides and hairsprayed to within an inch of it’s life.

Arraminta · 29/03/2026 21:43

Fab, such an easy look to recreate.

Early 80s would be scrunch dry your hair and heavily backcomb your fringe. Blue and pink eyeshadow. Wristful of plastic bangles. Pastel coloured dress with white stilettos.

Late 80s would be big hair, pale foundation, brown blusher and red lippy. Shoulder pads, plain black jacket, mini skirt and lace tights.

Big bangles , dungarees with one side hanging down with a bright t shirt underneath. Slightly rolled up legs on the dungas and plimsoles.

Croquetteh · 30/03/2026 21:25

Dexy’s midnight runners?

Jeans and chequered shirts

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 31/03/2026 16:57

You can also add neon colours - silky scarves, necklaces, earrings, bangles

or another option is white mans shirt and oversized black blazer jacket,

I think there are lots of different options depending on what you have available.

hair up in a top or side ponytail can be fun and easy to do.

Susan and Joanne from the Human League. Try to copy their dance moves if possible.

Last time I did 80s I bought a white "Choose Life" [Wham!] t-shirt from Amazon for about a tenner which I wore with white jeans and a bright hair bow.

Could that be feasible?

Doggymummar · 31/03/2026 20:14

I'm going to see Adam Ant in the summer, so I'm going 'new romantic'. Black skinny jeans (I haven't got any leather pants😂), knee high boots, big poofy black blouse and a scarf tied to my belt.

I have a couple of months to practice the make up. I'm attempting the Dandy Highwayman make up but I'll never look as good with it as he did. If any man was born to wear eyeliner and lip gloss it was that bloke 😁

ChocolateMunchBunch · 01/04/2026 12:02

Oh some great ideas here, thanks everyone! I think I can go to town on the hair and makeup but will most likely have to buy at least a top. Funnily enough I’d been thinking about a Relax tee but forgot about Choose Life.

Rock of Ages happened to come on telly last night and the hair metal look could be great fun too! Will need to have a wee nosy in the charity shop this weekend

appreciate all the ideas.

When I went to an 80s party I had a floral flounced short dress with wide white 80s bow leather belt, wore pixie boots with it in cerise, plastic Perspex blue square cut out earrings, neon bangles and necklace and back combed scrunched hair along with blue eyeshadow, bright pink lipstick. I bought the boots and neon items and eyeshadow off eBay/charity shop.

Do you know any girl children? They may have jewellery that would suit and you could borrow.

GoldDuster · 01/04/2026 12:17

Robert Palmer Addicted To Love was released in 1985, check out the video for inspiration for an alternative to loads of neon (which was only a minor proportion of 80s fashion), nylon and lace gloves and leg warmers.

It's really easy to recreate without buying lots of landfill.

Try googling images of Banarama in the 80s. Easy to do with jeans, t shirts, teased hair and a pair of braces
