How to style these new M&S boat shoes?

Bought them this morning. I need to try them with wide legs jeans but rn now I have them on with v slightly cropped barrel leg trousers - what socks would you go with? And with a tan dirndl skirt? A bold shoe needs the right socks.

I wouldn’t even try. So sorry but to be brutally honest style and those shoes don’t fit in the same sentence.

henlake7 · 25/03/2026 15:41

Id swap the laces out for something equally colourful, really lean into the whimsy!😁

I appreciate your honesty @blossomtoes ha. It's a good thing we all like different things.

That's a good idea @henlake7 I could make them my own that way.

I just immediately think Christopher Biggins when I see them, so maybe canary yellow socks?! Who knows, I'm going to pass on this one!

Tablesandchairs23 · 25/03/2026 15:48

Those are ugly shoes. Id give them to charity.

Allisnotlost1 · 25/03/2026 15:49

I‘m in two minds @Oneborneverydecade , I love how striking they are but they also kind of scare me! If you can pull them off, these shoes look awesome. On me, with barrel leg jeans, I’d look like my old history teacher.

Sock wise, I’d give them a miss entirely or go for something sheer that matches or coordinates with your skin tone. Which may mean waiting until it’s warmer (just started hailing here).

PomPomSugar · 25/03/2026 16:02

Just FYI my late teen kids are desperate for these type of shoes at the moment. If you look at how much vintage timberland deck shoes are going for on Vinted/Depop etc you would be surprised!

Oneborneverydecade · 25/03/2026 16:03

@GoldDuster they're definitely giving Christopher Biggins rn with dark red socks. There's even a little bit of a Boris vibe.

@Allisnotlost1 thanks, I do think I can pull them off (maybe misplaced confidence). A bare ankle would solve the problem you're right, I'll have a look now.

It hailed here earlier too. It's like winter

I have some black DM loafers which I love but they're a bugger to get on. These feel more like an outdoor slipper, like a Birkenstock mule

I love your determination tbh. Sometimes you just love and have to find a way to make it work. I had a pair of vintage men’s shoes, must have been a boy’s actually because I’m a size 4. I called them my bar mitzvah shoes because I couldn’t imagine where else a boy would have worn them, but they were smart old fashioned men’s shoes and I wore them all the time, with cropped skinny jeans and no socks or short black dresses from Whistles (when Whistles was good). You’ve slightly reignited my interest in making an effort.

Whosthetabbynow · 25/03/2026 16:13

Not for me

MrMucker · 31/03/2026 11:01

Also not for me, that style, although in themselves they are nice looking shoes.
Hard to imagine the best socks because I'm already stuck at barrel leg. I cannot imagine them pairing well with that sort of trouser leg at all. Boat shoes tend to look best with a clear and open view of the ankle shape, not peeping out from floppy swathes of fabric above them, because they have such stylized uppers.
If you wore them with a skirt or cropped or more huggy trousers, I'd go for a neutral and sheer sock/tights or even sockless, to stop things looking too busy.

TealReader · 31/03/2026 21:41

I think you’ll neee to experiment a bit. I’d start with a burgundy sock to match the lace and break up the two blues.

Mumwithbaggage · 31/03/2026 21:55

Good luck! Not my style but I'm too old to have much imagination with things like this.

SentFromIpheon · 31/03/2026 22:02

I'd style them by setting them on fire x

BasiliskStare · 31/03/2026 22:46

@Oneborneverydecade Ah - I quite like them , but no style influencer me 😂

I think the colour is pretty. Personally I think the laces are a bit heavy - so light tan or white might be better.
I also think they're better as warm spring / summer wear with no socks at all. But if you were to I would put similar colour socks on but only with trousers which covered the shoes.

Each to their own and I can see they might not be to everyone's taste but I can see them as being pretty and useful. 💐

They'll just have to be left to their own dubious charm I'd say. But they're a casual shoe which could be useful for summer.

Neveranynamesleft · 31/03/2026 22:51

I like the shoes but not the laces, they just do not go at all....bizarre choice of colour.

Pearlstillsinging · 31/03/2026 23:00

What did you envisage when you bought them?
Personally I would wear my socks that are exactly the right shade of blue, with trousers and nude or blue tights with a skirt.

LesLavandes · 31/03/2026 23:11

Love them

Xiexie · 31/03/2026 23:54

I think they are lovely shoes

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2026 00:02

There’s a clue in the name… wear them with clothes you mightwear for boating. Definitely no socks!

xrayted · 01/04/2026 00:26

Hideous. Swap the laces for white ones and style with white cigar pants and a boat necked stripey blue & white t-shirt and you might pull it off.

CookingFatCat · 01/04/2026 00:47

in summer with shorts and a white shirt and a straw sun hat.
