Best friends wedding at 50

zippyswife · 22/03/2026 08:20

Nearly 50 (I know age shouldn’t matter but…) and have my best friends wedding coming up.

confidence in my appearance is at an all time low- I live in jeans and trainers and am daunted by the thought of a smart wedding outfit.

im 5’8 size 12… menopausal apple (belly) but have cracking legs (if I need to show something).

any ideas? I’m not a frills or fuss person…

And what do people even wear on their feet at weddings? Mine haven’t seen a heel in a decade. I’m fully a birkies/ trainer girl

Wear a dress if you have good legs. Have a look on Pinterest for wedding guest outfits. People still dress up. Obviously it depends on the venue and season

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 22/03/2026 08:26

Wedge heels are your friend, if you don’t want to wear heels

landlordhell · 22/03/2026 08:28

Yes or a kitten heel.

zippyswife · 22/03/2026 08:30

I think it will be super-dressy as it’s at a fancy place.
A wedge heel- brilliant! I can wear those with a shorter dress and distract from the fact that the rest of me has gone to rat shit!
will hit Pinterest now!

Colour preferences?
Budget?
Print or plain?
At 5.8 and size 12 it should be easy to find something both that you like and it suits you.

zippyswife · 22/03/2026 08:36

Budget- up to maybe 150 I guess though could go over.
I prefer plain but am now wondering if a shorter boho style dress with wedges? Or is that not appropriate for a wedding?
im fair freckled so something that works with my skin tone I guess

Shorter boho, bit unusual and could look smart too IMHO, with the right shoes etc?

Thank you. I like this and would actually probably wear it again.

Something like This?
the floral bit will hide a tum, it will show off your legs, look good with low navy wedges and maybe pick out a pink for a waist length boxy cardigan

zippyswife · 22/03/2026 09:21

So I don’t have a waist (in fact I’m sure I go out at the waist).
So would prefer loose round the waist.
also crepey décolletage and big-ish boobs so would prefer no cleavage.

This type with black wedges and gold jewellery?

Sesquipedahlia · 22/03/2026 10:17

Would this sort of shape work for you?

https://www.stories.com/en-gb/product/sculptural-drawstring-midi-dress-navy-blue-1324180001/

(Given the likelihood of a grand occasion you probably want to avoid anything too beach holiday-ish. And a short dress would need careful balancing to avoid your looking top heavy.)

Also, if you want to show acres of leg you’ll need fashionable shoes at the end of them!

Sesquipedahlia · 22/03/2026 10:30

Short, bright:

You could look at the rest of the site, too.

That does not scream super dressy wedding, fancy place! That’s more Tesco and a bbq

Nofeckingway · 22/03/2026 11:14

Scarlett and Jo brand are lovely dresses with built in shapewear and so comfortable to wear . I am similar to you and have a few that I always get complimented on .

OP liked it and thanked me. So 🤷
Lots of suggestions on these threads are ridiculous. Like thousands of pounds and dresses you might consider if you were winning an Oscar.
Personally if I was going to a wedding and had asked for short and boho that would be well in the realm of what I'd be happy to wear.

Sesquipedahlia · 22/03/2026 11:39

OP liked it and thanked me.

But the OP is here because she doesn’t herself have a clear idea of what may be suitable …

jeaux90 · 22/03/2026 11:43

Similar age to you OP and I don’t wear heels. Last summer I wore a linen wide leg trouser suit with flatform sandals. If you are near a John Lewis you can book in for a free styling session to try some different styles.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 22/03/2026 11:45

Oh I knew I shouldn't have bothered responding.
Op asked for suggestions. I made one. She liked it.
Now people want to argue.
Why not just make better suggestions and let OP make her own mind up as to what's suitable? It's just clothes! 😂

Sesquipedahlia · 22/03/2026 11:48

Have to say I agree that a cool outfit involving trousers might feel more natural to the OP. If she could get over the desire to ‘flaunt’ (gutter press terminology!) her legs.

Only thing is that a great blouse and trousers would probably cost more than a simple dress.

BeenChangedForGood · 22/03/2026 12:01

I would have a look at Phase Eight @zippyswife ☺️ loads of lovely styles that would be very wedding appropriate 👍🏻

Haystackhunting · 22/03/2026 12:36

Dare I say it? I would go for a jumpsuit. I know they’re a bit of a nightmare when you need a waz. You’re not gonna get ripped roaring drunk. You’ll be absolutely fine. Navigating that scenario I would imagine.
