Stylish overnight/hand luggage bag

It's my 40th birthday this week and we're going on a family holiday to celebrate over the Easter school holidays. The holiday is my "big" present so to speak, but DH has asked if I'd like something to unwrap on the day and obviously I'm not going to say no! It's occurred to me that maybe it's time to retire the battered old changing bag I've been using as hand luggage for the last 8 years and get myself something a bit more stylish.

I'm thinking a large tote or small holdall in terms of size, the sort of thing I could pack full of snacks and coats for a day out or potentially would suffice just for me for an overnight trip. I don't have a particular budget in mind, probably no more than £300 but might go higher for something particularly nice so feel free to suggest fantasy purchases that I can't afford.

How many coats would you need to put in it?? That sounds like a big bag to me!

Oh just mine and the kids, I'm thinking lightweight macs rather than multiple big, heavy winter coats.

You need a Longchamp travel tote. Timeless classic

It is a classic, but after that other thread I'm worried I'll look like a teenager going to school 😂

Oooh I like that Santa Maria one in blue. Might be a bit small for what I had in mind, but it's lovely 😍

I would get something that has a slot that slips over the handle of a suitcase.
Something like this? For flights, passport and phone can go in front pocket, has a top zip so you can be secure.

I have a longchamp pliage and in my 60s . . .

We also use the very large travel Longchamp bag for weekends away.
if it’s just one night away it’s large enough for the two of us.
They are popular for a reason 😁

damelza · 22/03/2026 09:07

All lovely, but does anyone think that the Longchamps and others with just a "hand handle" are totally impractical. You have to carry it with your hand and there's no way to place it over the handles of a wheelie suitcase either. Unless, being the heathen that I am, I haven't noticed!

I'm not helping much, since I'm not a labels person, but I have totes of all sizes for travelling. They must have an optional shoulder strap (I can wear it cross body and be hands free) and be capable of going over the suitcase handles.

Have you checked Oliver Bonas? Way below your budget but I’ve picked up a nice one from there. Love the styles and good quality too https://www.oliverbonas.com/accessories/bags#filters.style=Weekend%20Bags

Below budget is not a bad thing! I actually love this one https://www.oliverbonas.com/accessories/jennie-camel-brown-faux-suede-tote-bag-403665

I have this Le Pliage expanding travel bag. It zips up into a regular sized travel bag but can be unzipped to double its capacity. It’s perfect if you have kids. It can be used in its zipped form for a weekend away but if you need to take enough for a few people or a longer trip it’s easy to unzip. And it had a long adjustable strap.

Can’t go wrong with a classic Brice Italian bag. The smaller weekend bag type might be a good size.
Mine is ‘ old’ no idea how old and it’s lasted well. It’s been overnight, shoved on trains, as baby travel bag etc
They have a whole range of sizes

I love my Le Pliage but apparently it is the school bag of choice these days 🤣

UnashamedLabelHo · 22/03/2026 20:17

I was so 😫about the Le Pliage thread I’ve put my flight bag (the shoulder one that zips shut so is great for hand luggage) in the bed drawer and told it I’ll see it in 5 years. Bless those teenagers but has a thread ever been so bad for a brand’s streetcred?
