Summer outfit ideas for a comfortable, stylish look at 49

cambiodenombre123 · 15/03/2026 15:02

Asking the mumsnet gods/goddesses to save my fashion woes. I want to feel comfortable, sexy and stylish this summer. To be able to go for city walks and sit in a beer garden and not worry about my belly, fat arms, weird elbows and crinkly neck. I'm 49, fine hair in a bob, hourglass shape with big boobs, 5'6" and slightly overweight. I want to look current and relevant if possible? Please give me some tips of what to wear.

What size are you and what’s your budget? Wide leg trousers and midi dresses are very current right now.

This is very flattering and a bargain option, loads of different patterns to choose from.

I ❤the Rohe dresses!

Open back tulip dress– Róhe is perfect.

cambiodenombre123 · 15/03/2026 20:22

Oh yes, my size sorry. I'm 12/14. Love the H&M dress. The Rohe dress is lovely tho won't be great for my arms or big boobs.

I can't afford it so was thinking of how it looked on an imaginary me Smile not the scraggy middle-aged woman with crepe stilton-coloured skin I actually am.

Zara always do great linen shirt dresses in different colours and usually stripes.

This looks easy to wear for days out and for a large bust?

Do not buy that. Londonrd.com at best is selling cheap Chinese clothes at vastly overpriced prices or won't send you anything.

Here's the same dress from Temu and Amazon at what is the realistic price.

I can’t really describe myself as relevant but bought this recently and feel fresh in it, looking forward to wearing it with sandals in warm weather and sleeves rolled up a bit. Cotton and has pockets. www.albaray.co.uk/products/woven-mix-t-shirt-dress-black-ss24?variant=44566705996013&country=GB&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23051602296&gbraid=0AAAAABpGpcZJlBOrbPYOStu-Hh2FWwng6&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsdnNBhC4ARIsAA_3hei7cMl7Onc1GWYzF3YDp7JknU8Kw2esXSI0RWzryFeTbaiypmXO9AcaAlZNEALw_wcB

It's a beauty of a dress, that tulip one - if I could afford it (& could carry off wearing it!) I'd happily wear it to sit in beer gardens ...!!!

Ive just bought this for a casual summer outfit. Crew clothing (im 64 so my arms need to be covered). Im wearing it with these Cotton Traders lyocell wide leg jeans which feel silky and dont crease badly. Im wearing them with some lovely silver sandals and a chunky acrylic navy necklace I bought from etsy.

I don’t think you should start buying items until you’ve worked out what your style is… even loosely speaking. Without that you’re going to end up with half worn / unworn clothes or pieces that only work with one other item in the wardrobe. How much city walking do you do? Do these clothes have to serve other functions ( ie day to day supermarket / office wear). What do you normally wear ? Are you a trouser / dress person normally? Casual? Preppy? Glam. All that is useful. I’m a wide leg or oversized man’s shirt type of dresser in summer - flat sandals or trainers. Sometimes I wear a t shirt dress or Bermuda shorts with a shirt or vest. I know what my style is. If you can work that out it’s easier to direct you to some nice shops ( obviously there are places to go to work out your style if you’re unsure )

I bought these linen blend trousers from Uniqlo last week and they're great.....they look better in person than in the photos which is true of lots of Uniqlo stuff. They are really light and floaty but could be dressed up and down.

Are those trousers OK on a short ( old) person please? I always feel there is a lot of fabric flapping about.

As a general rule it’s best to avoid random brands like that as it’s all rubbish. That dress is terrible anyway.

It's coming up as good on Trustpilot but the Londonrd site looks dodgy. I'd avoid.

That site has 5 patently fake Trustpilot reviews. It won't exist in 3 months time.

They look fake to me too.

@bridgetreilly , you've not seen my arms. They were stunning 25 years ago. They look like wrinkly tubigrip now.
