Though I had to laugh when he dismissed any notion that he might care about or even notice brands - whilst reeling off some fabulous designer names.

I could've sworn MD was one of the people who got a trinny and Susanna makeover on the telly, more than a decade ago I'm sure. Unless I dreamt it.

Ha! I don't remember Monty on that show but I do remember Jeremy Clarkson who clearly hated every minute; also Ingrid Tarrant who was / is a very flamboyant personality with a wardrobe to match. T&S insisted on sticking to their usual formula with her and never factored in her personality. It was clearly the wrong thing to do and, in the end, Ingrid ignored everything they said. I was a T&S and 'dress for your shape' devotee until then - it was the first time the doubts set in.

But I digress. My own view is that Monty is fully entitled to decide his shorts wearing days are over but that he doesn't get to decide for other men. He's a style icon, not a Supreme Leader.

Wasn’t he a jewellery designer before he was a gardening expert? That would seem to suggest an interest in personal presentation.

Just went for a hunt for his jewellery - if you Google it lots of images come up. Very gaudy and opposite pieces compared to his image. Here is a photo of him from that time.

Personally, I think the shabby bohemian look that he likes to effect is as cultivated as his garden... !
