Cartier Tank watch or Longines Conquest Classic

I'm not a watch wearer. I've tried many watches, but never worn one regularly.

But, I'd like a really nice watch, something wearable, a real luxury, classic styling, but also quite discreet.

Which would you choose:

#1 Longines: https://www.longines.com/en-gb/p/watch-conquest-classic-l2-286-4-72-6 what puts me off is that Longine is just the high end sister of Swatch, so the inner workings aren't anything special.

#2 Cartier:

#3 No watch, non watch wearers have no business owning fancy watches.

Or another watch..?

i have a Longines watch which was reasonably expensive. Had it 17 years, it goes with everything and every situation, from my own wedding to daily wear with the kids. I still love it! It’s classy, discreet and never let’s me down!

RampantIvy · 28/02/2026 16:10

I prefer the Longines.

smallsilvercloud · 28/02/2026 16:15

Both are very different prices, I have a longines but if I could afford a Cartier I’d go with that.

AKAanothername · 28/02/2026 16:18

You need to try them on, there’s no point buying an expensive watch if it doesn’t feel and look right on your wrist. I thought I wanted a Tank but ended up with a Ballon Bleu because it suited me better.

Dragonscaledaisy · 28/02/2026 16:28

The Tank is very popular. I would have a look at the Ballon Bleu and panthere as well - the latter is by far my personal favourite and the most comfortable on my wrist.

MrsHaroldWilson · 28/02/2026 16:37

I much prefer the Cartier of the two models you've chosen. If I were buying a Longines, I'd get one in a similar shape to the Cartier like this one.

Disclaimer - I drool over these in shop windows sometimes, but they're outside my budget so can't comment on function, durability etc.

I LOVE my Tank Francaise. It’s pre-owned

gillefc82 · 28/02/2026 16:42

I have a similar Longinnes Conquest watch, with a dark blue dial and inlaid diamonds for the number settings. It’s classy, stylish and hasn’t missed a beat for me in the almost 10 years I’ve had it.

stepfordwifey · 28/02/2026 16:48

Love the Longines but I’d prefer the other face variation where numerals aren’t a different colour, (3rd one along).

SENDChaos · 28/02/2026 16:53

My mum has the tank with the sapphire, brought it 22 years ago for £1700 and I’m not even gonna say what it’s worth now. I have the Rolex Oyster pink face which I barely wear but brought it more as an investment piece really

YellingAway · 28/02/2026 16:56

I have always wanted a tank but my budget is sadly more Casio! However, I would second the poster who said to go and try them both on to see which suits best.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 28/02/2026 16:59

I have the Cartier tank and it’s a lovely watch. Subtle and goes with everything. The bracelet on it is really nice too.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/02/2026 17:05

I dont like either of those so my vote is 'keep looking'.

But I dont really see the point of buying an expensive watch, when youre not that bothered. Buy a cheaper watch and use the money for something you do value.

Lemonademoney · 06/03/2026 20:57

I have the Tank. It’s gorgeous, really beautifully made. I recently had the strap adjusted in a nice jewellers and they admired it as a really nice piece. I would go and have a try on of a few styles. I was convinced I wanted a Panthere but it didn’t actually suit me particularly well. I tried on three different styles of Cartier and for me (as an everyday watch) the tank was superb.

I bought my Tank Francaise watch when I started my first job after Uni aged 22. I’m now 52 and still love it and wear it daily. So based on that, I’d recommend the Tank Francaise! You really need to go into a shop and try different watches on though. We were broken into a few years ago and my watch was stolen. Our home insurance arranged for a replacement watch from Mappin and Webb and the buying experience was fab. We got shown to a huge, private room, had champagne and afternoon tea and were fussed over all afternoon. So enjoy buying your watch!
