Bacterial Infection from manicure WWYD?

Weirdnailhelp · 26/02/2026 08:07

I’m now on antibiotics due to a bacterial infection from a manicure (BIAB infill) I’ve been going to the (very reputable) salon for ages. No previous issues.

What would you do? I’ve not told them yet. But I am mad as I’m on strong antibiotics and am having to soak my hand in water three times plus plus take probiotics. And I paid £51 for it!!! I also needed to take time off work to go to the GP (I’m a teacher)

Have you got a photo?

I get bacterial infections in my fingers all the time whether or not I get manicures. It's just one of those things 🤷🏻‍♀️

Onefortheroad25 · 26/02/2026 08:12

I had one before but it was after I took my acrylics off myself. I didn’t think it was anything to do with the salon tbh. I soaked my finger in diluted dettol a few times and it cleared up.

That’s interesting. I’ve never had an infection before, certainly nothing that has needed antibiotics.

Unfortunately I got an infection from having a BIAB gel manicure, it's apparently well known in salons now that some people can develop strong reactions against the builder gel (something to do with an element called HEMA). I had to have two months of strong medication from the Dr and its not fully cleared but they took me off them because they're tough on the liver. No more gel manicures for me sadly.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/02/2026 08:16

Did they nick your skin?

Nearly50omg · 26/02/2026 08:43

How do you know it’s from the salon? You have no idea where you got it from!! Your kitchen your toilet etc ALL more
Likely places you picked up an infection! It’s a very minor one too so don’t understand all the drama over it?

Crazyfrog44 · 26/02/2026 09:22

Strong antibiotics for that? Just needs salt water baths in hot water a few times a day!

Are you a doctor then?! The base of my thumb is swollen and hot to the touch.

So for those saying I’ve overreacted. The doctor prescribed me antibiotics. It’s been 10 days I’ve been soaking it for and it’s still throbbing hot and red. Hence the abs.

It's a well known risk. Your cuticles get pushed back, making them soft and open to infection.
You could have picked up the bacteria anywhere, not necessarily in the salon.

Frostynoman · 26/02/2026 10:42

You need to go back and perhaps have iV abx.

Do you want to complain to get a refund, or apology or simply let them know what they need to look at their hygiene?

Smartiepants79 · 26/02/2026 12:25

I’d be surprised if you can actually prove it’s their fault. I get infections in the skin around my finger at least once a year. I haven’t had antibiotics for them ever though. I just wouldn’t go back to that salon and maybe not have that kind of nails again for a while.

Very true. I was annoyed at the time as she was quite rough and it hurt. Anyway, it seems it’s quite common. I’ve obviously been lucky up until now . I was freaking out a bit as it was throbbing so much it was keeping me awake, I had to take painkillers. It’s calmed down now thank goodness.

I would let the salon know you developed an infection after your manicure and where the infection started and hopefully they will take a look at how closely staff is sterilizing their equipment.

Jrisix · 26/02/2026 12:59

This happened to me after a pedicure! The person doing it was very rough and careless. It was painful at the time and I should have stopped it but I was too polite or shy perhaps.

A few weeks later I had an infection and eventually had to have a doctor numb it and remove part of the nail to drain it.

Unfortunately no way to prove it was caused by the salon. But I'm very sure it was.

What a moronic answer. The OP is on strong antibiotics and is having to soak her hands 3 times a day and take time of work because of this. So it’s hardly “just one of those things”…

ChocHotolate · 26/02/2026 13:23

I am a nurse practitioner in a walk in centre, we see loads of these infections caused by manicures and nail salons. I can only assume hygiene is dodgy in a lot of these places

MiniCooperLover · 26/02/2026 17:28

It's not a given its down to the salon hygiene, as I say I developed a well-known allergy to BIAB and the place I go is scrupulous, I see them sterilizing their stuff after each visit. But it does look like whoever did your finger took the cuticle too short and it looks like the skin all around your edges is damaged which would definitely help the infection come in. I hope it clears soon for you.

Unfortunately, she commented twice on this…

ChanelLove · 26/02/2026 17:33

You are more likely to pick up an infection from anywhere after a manicure- it's not necessarily from the salon itself.

roadtowhoknowswhere · 26/02/2026 17:38

How does the manicurist file your nails.
Is it by hand with a nail file or with an electric file.
The first is better for the nail.
The second can cause problems.
