Carolyn Bessette Kennedy ~ Style

After watching episodes of Love Story, I’ve been sucked into watching lots of Instagram reels on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her style.

It seems that she managed to be stylish in a timeless way, as most of the outfits I’ve seen wouldn’t be out of place in today’s style guides. Wondering if it’s because she opted for simple clean lines, with minimum accessories or am i over simplifying it?

I definitely do not look as chic in a white shirt and a pair of jeans.

Hitting 50 and I don’t feel groomed or stylish and am always envious of anyone who carries off the look effortlessly.

She had great hair, and a good preppy look in general.

StedSarandos · 25/02/2026 19:09

She always looked amazing. Black, camel (not skanky instagrammer beige) and white.

Tall, skinny, blonde.

There’s a podcast called Talk 90s To Me which talks about her relationship to the Calvin Klein brand in one episode. It was really interesting.

She was rich, thin and 33 when she died, worked in fashion in NYC and had that classic French girl look. The normcore look of the time suited her.

Unless you’re the sort of person who suits that preppy vibe it’s a bit spare.

The Kibbe system is great, not everyone looks like CBK but everyone can find what works for them.

Thanks @BlueEyedBogWitch I will find that for a listen.

Yes @StedSarandos camel!

She was super thin and got a hairstyle in the mid-90s that really suited her. Add her natural chic taste in fashion and it was a winning combination. The only thing she wore that I didn’t like was the headband with a ponytail scrunchy. I was surprised by that combination and believed it should have been one or the other.

JFK looked amazing too. I saw a pic of him and James Spader. Sheer preppy good looks.

I agree with other PPs, and also with you- simple clean lines with minimal accessories.

I saw him once on a street in Dublin. He was indeed very good looking - seemed immensely chilled just loping along by himself. Great hair.

She had epic genes, was rich, and a had style icons to train her. She also sadly died very young so had little time to make mistakes.

Nofeckingway · 25/02/2026 22:29

She worked for Calvin Klein whose specialty in the 90s was that simple classic look . Bet she had things adjusted to fit . Stuck to black a lot . And wore simple satiny type shift dresses that are popular now. Tall slender blonde with statement red lipstick. Admired by women and men everywhere. But still led a difficult life and ultimately a tragic death . Very sad for them both . And also her sister died which many forget . I wonder how the Bessette parents feel seeing this played out on the screen?

Screamingabdabz · 25/02/2026 22:40

I’ve been a fan of her style for years but she was slim, had great face shape and wore simple lines/colours with designer coats/shoes. It’s not hard to look good with those attributes. And the 90s was a lovely time for feminine but strong fashion.

Unlike other posters, I think her hair was the least of it - quite often brassy, it did not really suit her and wasn’t particularly fashionable or styled at the time (which is probably why it seems ‘timeless’ now).

I do admire the star quality to wear a white shirt day or night and make it look elevated. I just look like a fat waitress!

SparklyBrickViper · 25/02/2026 23:19

@Nofeckingway I believe her mother died in 2013. I read her surviving sister lives a reclusive life.

I often wonder how awful it must be for relatives when things like this become hyped.

JFK J sister has recently lost her daughter so it must feel very raw and intrusive.

It's weird how she's become so popular. It's the JFK connection.

queenofarles · 26/02/2026 08:10

Indeed it was the JFK connection, true her style is very classic , simple, and timeless. That’s how I remember the late 90s in general even as teen,
Gwyneth Paltrow and Christy Turlington are other great examples of that era , Christy was the OG Calvin Muse and of the 90s Minimal style In general , she was so naturally effortless.

She absolutely was a style icon at the time.
