Help me find a dress for a First Holy Communion?

My child is taking First Holy Communion in May.
(Having seen the other threads running on the subject I'll cover my bases- it is a Catholic service, we do dress up for them where I live so looking for something semi formal, do not want to debate how other denominations observe the event).

Shoulders need to be covered and knee/midi length, definitely not short and would prefer not maxi as I don't want to look like a bridesmaid.
Preferred colours light blue, lilac or at a push navy. I would prefer a dress not keen on jumpsuits on me.

I'm 40, size 10, hourglass shape so like to show my waist as things that are loose fitting tend to make me look shapeless.
This from nobody's child is my current front runner but it just isn't very exciting.
Would like to keep budget under £100 as I'm not likely wear it often after this.

That’s absolutely lovely and it ticks all the boxes. I think I would do a lot of arm toning exercises before the big day to make sure I didn’t have bingo wings flopping around.

But that dress is gorgeous and you could wear it again

The other thing to do is the moment you take it off sell it on Vinted. Don’t keep it if you don’t think you’ll wear it again just get it sold while it’s still on the website. I think even if you get half of it or even a quarter, it’s still a better use of your money than sat in the wardrobe

@Mosman2020 I keep going back to it, can't find anything else that meets all my wants but it just feels a little boring! Not too worried about showing my arms they're in ok shape, the covered shoulders is more for the sake of propriety in chapel.

Are you Irish? It looks suitable but you need to think of jacket or scarf/stole plus accessories and shoes. I’m thinking bright blue heels.

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain Scottish, so fairly similar, Holy Communion is a big deal for the child and people dress up similarly to a christening.

I agree it could be worn again. More dressy dresses if you mix with FHC crowd you probably couldn’t wear again.

My stepdad’s family are Irish so I know FHC (been to a couple!) are very dressy. Not sure if Scottish is more so than Irish though.

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I don't think we go for it in quite as big a style as the Irish but it's definitely still a dress up event. Will probably go for a mid/kitten heel I can't do skyscrapers these days.

I bought a lovely pink trouser suit last year in Zara and got good wear out of both the jacket and trousers afterwards matching them with other items I already had so they didn’t just hang in the wardrobe . I bought a white blouse from Sezane that I then wore a lot with jeans during the summer . So it was an outfit I glammed up for the event but could wear it again. Coincidentally enough the chat at the school gate today was about the mums communion outfits

dinoapple · 25/02/2026 15:52

@SparkyBlue I had my eye on a lovely blue trouser suit on Vinted and someone snapped it up while I dithered!

@MiddleAgedDread not tried on but think I may order it and see how it looks. I had looked at the blue coast dress you've linked as well, have heard they're a bit of a nightmare with returns lately so been a bit wary of ordering in case it doesn't suit.
