Hello, I’m hoping the stylish women of MN can come to my rescue. DS is getting married in a month and I’m panicking because I don’t have a dress. I’ve found a dressmaker willing to make me one in time but I’ve got no clue about what to ask for. Big breasts (36H), formerly a classic hourglass but age and weight have given me a bit of a belly, though I have the remnants of a waist. Summer-ish though light long sleeves are ok. I’d love something floral but they’re hard to find. Preferably vivid colours.

Would be so grateful for a steer- I’m a bit clueless in this department.

Well I'm probably clueless, too, but I couldn't leave you unanswered so here's an idea just to kick off. Although I'm a bit confused, are you asking for dresses you might buy, or ideas that your dressmaker might make, or both?

What height, size & colouring are you, OP?

Oh, thanks so much! I've had a bit of a shitty few weeks (nothing much - just feeling sorry for myself & the weather is crap & I just turned 59!!) - so your lovely comment has quite honestly made my day 😊!!!

Bless you. It's true! I'm very impressed with your style and beauty input! Especially on some of the crazy bunfight threads. 😍 Sorry you're having a tough time, may it very soon pass.

Thank you all so much for these! Thanks for getting the ball rolling @TemporarilyCantDoMyself(love your username). Sorry about the mixed messaging 😀 - I’m seeking to buy or to have made. Trouble is I’m not in the UK so it will be tricky to change anything I buy (a friend will bring my purchases with her).

@EleanorMc67I’m sorry you’re having a tough time of it. To answer your questions: I’m 5.2, roughly 145 pounds, dark hair, early 60’s. I adore the colouring in the Scarlett and Jo dress that @PutThatDownNowposted. I also love the dress@Mathsdebatorposted but I should have said I need sleeves :(.

So would you equate to around a size 14 here in the UK? Or, say, a 12-14 on bottom
& 14-16 on top?

And you've not located anywhere that you can shop at all? Say to visit department stores in a city a few hours away???

RomanyCream · 26/02/2026 06:07

Hi @EleanorMc67, yes 12-14 on the bottom and 16-18 on top. It makes shopping a nightmare. I have trawled all my local shops but I’ve had no luck - the dresses are either flouncy on top which just draws attention to my boobs, or waaay too tight on top. That’s why I’ve started thinking about getting something made, but first prize would be a dress that’s ready to go.

I was about that size until recently, wore a 36J bra, 5'3 and hourglass-ish. I have a pile of dresses I have been meaning to sell including some beautiful occasion dresses. I can send you pictures directly if you want and are ok with pre-loved? Send me a message if so. I totally feel the pain of trying to find formal tailored stuff being this shape!

So would your friend be able to bring over several options, you try on & hopefully pick one you love - & you either post back or she takes back the rest so that you're refunded? As relying on what she brings across is quite a risk? (As I'm sure you realise!!)

Dont panic though ... it's doable!!! I will return later with some thoughts ...!!!
