Nail gone weird after BIAB (photo attached)

Hi, apologies for the gross photo!

I got my usual BIAB infill done last Thursday. She filed down the side of my thumb quite roughly and I remember it hurting at the time.

Anyway, I went away on holiday and my thumb got a bit swollen. I asked the pharmacist who said it was probably just a bit irritated and to soak it in salt and water. Now I’m home, I went back to the nail place to get the BIAB removed and it’s green down one side! I think it’s probably a bruise but I’m worried to be honest. It’s tender down that side and the thumb pad itself is quite swollen. It’s not agony but feels a bit throbbing like a cartoon thumb! 💥

Any thoughts? Thanks.

What did they suggest?

There’s nothing to squeeze. I think it’s a bruise.

The girl didn’t have a clue! She just said she hadn’t seen anything like that before but that the nail looked ok and it was more the skin itself. I should maybe have asked someone else in the shop but it was 6pm on Saturday night! I think I’ll do the salty water and see.

Looks infected to me - I can see yellow and red?

FrenchBunionSoup · 21/02/2026 20:34

Looks like a greenie to me (Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria). I haven't had one myself but I believe you should disinfect and let it grow out.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 21/02/2026 20:37

I had this after a pedicure- needed antibiotics

Weirdnailhelp · 21/02/2026 20:46

Oh Jesus Christ!! sitting with my hand in salty water. Had to turn the YouTube video off 🫣

I wouldn't panic, but I wouldn't be going back there myself

It’s a really reputable place, but yes I’m 🤨

Haha don't stress, it's really quick and simple and you'll get immediate relief.

You are hard-core! I’m praying I won’t need to squeeze any pus, yuck! I’m going to make a saltwater compress for my thumb and sleep with it tonight.

I’ve had paronychia a few times and always have to have 10 days of really strong antibiotics as it just grows and grows and oozes lumpy green ming…… keep an eye, OP!

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 22/02/2026 15:57

I had this after BIAB. Never got any better and ended up having the nail removed: pretty horrid by all accounts stick to acrylics now, much as I loved BiAB

Blindsided2025 · 22/02/2026 16:02

Looks like paronychia to me too, I’m a bit of a cuticle picker so have had it loads before. Salt water and squeeze any pus out and it should clear up quickly. If the infection worsens see GP for antibiotics.

KitsyWitsy · 22/02/2026 16:05

Was it from a salon or a nail bar?

It’s a proper salon/nail bar. Not a dodgy one.

iodine would work better that salt water for this, it will kill any nasties if you do have an infection
