Please help! I’ve never been the most fashionable but ever since having DS 20 months ago I well and truly have no style.

Im 34, a size 14 (quite wide allover!!) and 5ft4. I really don’t like heels…

I have a friends 40th coming up. The dress code is smart/casual.

Can anyone please help me with what to wear? Bonus points for links or pics.

Budget of up to £100. Thanks

Anything with a lace hem is really on trend at the moment. I bought this top from New Look and have worn it out a few times. It’s very flattering and easy to dress up or down https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/tops/black-lace-hem-boxy-t-shirt/p/949579801

For me, it depends on which friendship group.

Me personally, I'd ask somebody what they're wearing and go from there 😊

I know what I wear, @Luckypea - but I’m thirty years older than you so it would be a bit reckless to offer specific advice.

Smart casual covers almost everything that’s not a ballgown or a bikini - what would you like to wear?

storageconcern · 22/02/2026 07:00

It depends on what the function is. Are you doing an afternoon of lunch and drinks or is it a party at a venue evening drinks type thing?

TroubledBloodyMary · 22/02/2026 07:11

Obviously you know the familiar High St shops, @Luckypea. But for further inspiration - do any of these ways of dressing appeal (scroll through everything)?

Depends on the venue and the group, and whether it’s day or night- and the weather!

Luckypea · 22/02/2026 11:02

Thanks all. It’s at a venue (just a local pubs function room) and is at night.

Following some research I like the look of a waistcoat style vest top, wide leg jeans with ballet pump or Mary Jane style shoes.

Sounds good.

Personally, I think wide legged jeans need boots or trainers to balance them.
