Dyed my hair black by accident

In an attempt to save money, I’ve dyed my own hair. I picked a medium brown colour. No. It’s straight up black. I have vey thick hair, a fringe and very pale skin so it makes me very washed out and look even more anaemic than I am 😭 I don’t know if there’s anything I can do? Maybe after a few washes it’ll dye down (pun intended). My dc are going to freak out when they see me when they get up.

Is it a permanent dye, or one that fades away?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/02/2026 07:19

Get some Colour B4 from Boots today. I did exactly the same as you a few years ago and it really strips the colour out. Stinks a bit though!

Augustus40 · 17/02/2026 07:23

Buy Vosene shampoo

pinkponie · 17/02/2026 07:24

Permanent 🥲 the problem with stripping is under that is a light brown dye which is covering pink 😬 which is covering bleached parts of dark hair.

Or you could tan yourself orange and rock the Winkleman?

pinkponie · 17/02/2026 07:30

@NooNakedJacuzzinessthat was genuinely my thought this morning. It’s exactly Claudia’s hair.

You can buy colour remover. In Australia you can get small sachets from a retail hair shop and do it yourself. If your hair is thick I suggest you buy a few sachets.

Wellshellsbells · 17/02/2026 07:33

Few washes with washing up liquid should take some of the heaviness out.use lots of conditioner as it will feel dry.

Maybe if I rock up to the castle they’ll let me host the traitors 🥲

If it’s much darker than the box implies it’s probably just not properly rinsed out yet. I’ve been dying mine for years and it always looks a bit dark until I’ve washed it two or three times.

OvernightBloats · 17/02/2026 07:50

It will hopefully fade - I would let it 'settle'. Using lots of harsh chemicals on it to try to get out the black colour may wreck your hair.

yikesss · 17/02/2026 08:03

Use head and shoulders to wash a few times

thekewgirl · 17/02/2026 08:07

I did this exact same thing - again it was a medium brown allegedly but came out black. I tried a colour stripper thing and it smelt horrible and made zero difference… I went to a hair salon and they said I just needed to wait and somehow style it out! I washed it regularly and took care of it and I have to say it’s slowly faded and I’ve now started going lighter. It’s been about 16 months since my dye incident. You may have better luck that me, hope so!

ItsuAtsu · 17/02/2026 08:15

Another vote for Head and Shoulders as I’ve been there, done that. In the meantime increase your make up to provide a distraction and console yourself that lots of people are nowhere near as observant as we believe, certainly not as aware of the issue as the person concerned is.

You are very bold 😂

Notmycuppatea · 17/02/2026 08:35

Oh no dont worry. I always use to dye my hair brow and change colour. It always looked black especially when I would get medium brown. Just wash it a few times and it fades out to the colour you want.

Elephantplant · 17/02/2026 08:43

I did this during covid. Went from blonde to mid brown- but it went black.
I did everything- clarifying shampoo, washing up liquid and stripped it twice.

It went a quite, very even nice shade of orange.
Then I dyed it dark blonde.

I'm lucky I didn't lose my hair.

NewGoldFox · 17/02/2026 08:49

It will lighten up after a few washes. Head and shoulders and hot water will help.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 17/02/2026 08:54

I've dyed mine black and it's taking some getting used to 😂

Bizarrely, it looks awful down but when I wear it up, it looks perfect!
