I wouldn’t do navy trainers with a navy trouser suit. The matchy-matchy is the opposite of the modernised effect you’re after.

Go metallic (eg silver with navy; I love a gold trainer but the wrong style can lean a bit ‘cruise ship pensioner’).

I’d also think about shocking pink. Orange would also work. Or bright green.

Leopard print is also great with navy.

I wear burgundy suede Converse with my navy trouser suit.

I like the cruise ship pensioner analogy and will remember it if ever tempted by a gold trainer.

TealReader · 11/02/2026 09:47

I think the more modern look would be flat shoes- loafers or pointed toe slingbacks.

Oh not all gold trainers. Just the Sketchers and Hotter type or the round toe plimsoll type. Chunky or Adidas Gazelle type shape are ace. (I have two pairs of gold and silver trainers and am not a pensioner and have never been on a cruise.)

😂ok youve sold black to me.
But now what colour top under jacket if black shoes????

OP posts:
SoScarletItWas · 12/02/2026 06:58

If you got the burgundy trainers with the cream stripe, you could do a cream top under the jacket to tie things together.

i honestly wouldn’t do black. It might work but it looks a bit safe and you wanted to modernise the outfit. Black shoes will be ‘I’ve just put on some shoes’ whereas a contrast with either a coloured shoe or trainer will be more striking.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 12/02/2026 23:39

Ahhh yes cream top

Op have a look at Joey the label

You can buy armbands to push the jacket sleeves up your arms to show what you are wearing underneath and I don’t know why but I think it makes the fancy trainers look more coherent with a suit …
