M&S air yarn jumpers - awful quality?

Recently bought a M&S air yarn V neck jumper & after just wearing it out for a pub lunch the other day (maybe 2 hours max, not yet washed) the front is all bobbled.

I’m really baffled about how this happened - I was definitely not writhing around on my front! I suppose I might have leant against the bar for a couple of minutes when ordering a glass of wine, but that’s all.

I can only conclude these M&S air yarn jumpers are appalling quality. Shame as it looked nice. Has anyone else found this?

Last few jumpers and a cardigan from M&S have been terrible quality. Won’t be buying from them again.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/01/2026 10:42

I have an M and S air yarn cardigan and its ok so far but I haven't worn it that much.

EstherGreenwood63 · 30/01/2026 10:58

Yes, awful tat.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/01/2026 11:08

Even Marks merino is poor now. The one I bought last autumn is already in a worse state than my ones from 2/3 years ago. I don’t rate their cashmere either. Their men’s jumpers are still okay, so I think they’re deliberately making the women’s less durable. It’s really fucking annoying.

thedevilinablackdress · 30/01/2026 12:33

Shocking quality, made my teeth hurt just looking at it in the shop. Take it back, not remotely fit for purpose. Bet there's no 'air yarn' in the men's department.

Willyb · 31/01/2026 14:01

As a man, I’m right there with you.
I was in the process of buying two jumpers but then, thankfully, noticed that they have a “chunky ribbed neck” instead instead of a folded over neckline. It’s thin and nasty. When did this happen? I’ve bought many over the years, and count on and have come to rely on M&S for this sort of reliable item. This is not a proper sweater! I hope their buyer smartens up and orders proper jumpers for next season!

SeanutBrittleOnToastedCoral · 31/01/2026 14:03

most of M&S women’s jumpers are polyester crap. Acrylic isn’t as bad, but shops try to pass it off as wool and price it way above what it should be.

I’d avoid M&S for jumpers unless you’ve checked the materials

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 31/01/2026 14:04

Far prefer uniqlo, their woollens actually last and are good quality.

northbacchus · 31/01/2026 14:06

I think the blend is the problem, when they do mixes of materials it does tend to bobble quicker (as a knitter).

HollyGolightly4 · 31/01/2026 14:09

Yep. Bobbles pretty much straight away! V disappointed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/01/2026 14:12

Air yarn is mnsw. It has to be to get the ‘air’ texture. It’s also texturised to get this effect ( ie uses heat to change the yarn)

So increases texture and manmade=bobbles.

Is never buy any ‘air’ yarn.

explanationplease · 31/01/2026 14:16

Snap! Is air yarn that sort of fuzzy stuff? I have an m and s jumper from last autumn 25 in that green. It bobbled instantly and has done so again since being de bobbled. I haven’t even washed it yet and it’s ruined. Not very expensive at around £30-£40, but a complete waste of money.

heartsinvisiblefury · 31/01/2026 14:20

Same - after one wear it looked like it was only fit for the bin

outerspacepotato · 31/01/2026 15:33

Blown yarn is wool and/or alpaca blown into nylon tubes and yes, it pills. The advantage is it makes a very lightweight yet very warm sweater. The electric shaver will work, but you have to be careful not to cut the tube.

I use a Gleener fabric shaver. Carefully. I have sweaters a few years old I made from blown yarn that I use this on and they look pretty good.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/01/2026 16:20

There won’t be much merino or alpaca blown in at m and s. It’ll be all manmade.

Thingamebobwotsit · 31/01/2026 18:56

Generally I find most of M&S stuff has gone down hill in the past 18 months.

They are not the only one though. Getting harder to buy good quality.

Serenwib · 31/01/2026 19:06

I have one, it bobbled terribly on the first wear but I removed the bobbling and it has stayed fairly bobble free on subsequent wears.
