Jeans that are between straight and wide

I am 5’2” about 8 stone and in an effort to be vaguely modern for Spring tried on some wide leg jeans and trousers today and had the biggest laugh for ages. They made me look kind of square. Too much flappy fabric. Usually go for classic straight jeans from M&S size 10 and shorten as necessary.
Anyone have solutions for this problem please?

For me it’s boot cut. I have skinny legs though so it might be different for you. Have you tried boot cut? I just got some great ones from M&S.

I know exactly what you mean. They need another name for Wide Leg but Not Very. Like straight legs but a bit wider.
I did find some last year by looking at all the images in the Next website for wide leg jeans. They might have been JD Williams and were cheap. Sort of between wide and straight.

I got the 2nd ones but the 1st come in short length

They definitely don't suit short people!

User415373 · 29/01/2026 05:46

Wel I'm 5ft 1 and I live in wide leg jeans! Obviously they have to be the right length but maybe they just take some getting used to?
I get jeans from ASOS because I like that you can filter by length, they have lots of choice included not too wide!

Peonyperfection · 29/01/2026 06:09

River Island do a Straight Relaxed, which I think is between the two.

piscofrisco · 29/01/2026 06:19

River Island straight jeans come out quite wide but not wide leg Iyswim? I’m 5.5 and a size 10 for context).

FarriersGirl · 29/01/2026 07:16

I have M&S Carrot leg jeans. They are flattering on me at 5’3 and size 10. I find wide leg jeans just overwhelm my shape. These are a narrower take on the barrel leg.

Whatwouldnanado · 29/01/2026 08:08

Thank you. Lots to go on here. I will check out the suggestions. River Island Straight relaxed will be a good starter.

I am 5 foot and a size 8 and have wide leg jeans from Topshop (ASOS). They are low waisted though as I can't do high waisted AND wide leg as it's just too much material and I have a short torso. I also have wide leg trousers from M&S that looks fine.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/01/2026 10:13

Slim flares? Although I’m not entirely sure what the difference is between these and boot cut.

IjustbelieveinMe · 29/01/2026 10:40

Uniqlo barrel jeans in the shorter length, life changing!

Yes I have three and I am size 8 5ft 3 they do them in petit which is what I got

Lemondessert · 29/01/2026 11:14

Next for boot cut
Asos for slightly wide
I can’t go to wide they look ridiculous. Similar body type to yourself.

EdinaMonsoon · 29/01/2026 11:26

Levi 501 90’s are a good compromise. Although they are loose through the legs, they are fitted around the waist & somewhere between a mid to low rise which is more flattering than many loose styles. I also love that they have zero stretch so they don’t sag like so many high street styles.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 29/01/2026 14:33

5'2, size 8 here and just bought some Halara wide leg jeans, I love them and have had many compliments...they are so soft and comfortable

TwinklyMoose · 29/01/2026 14:47

Marks and Spencer’s did some called stovepipe that are straight but not slim, high waist and make me feel a bit more trendy. I am 5’2 and the really wide ones make me look like a kite. These are slim on the waist and bottom and then straight down.
Howevwr annoyingly they have stopped doing them! If anyone knows of any similar I reckon you would like them. Sorry probably not much help but following this tread with interest

Floisme · 29/01/2026 14:56

I've seen some straight legs in H&M that I thought were verging on wide. I imagine that as the trend for a wider leg grows, straight legs will track it, just as they went very narrow during the skinnies regime.

stargirl27 · 29/01/2026 16:32

I have 2 cotton on pairs like this. One pair is a bit straighter and the other is more of a flare. I'm around 5'1 and 8 stone too and they look great on and are so comfy! They are a mid rise, I often find high rise come up too high on me.
