Long navy dress but what colour shoes?

Going to a posh event next month and have a long navy velvet dress, tight fit. I’ve not worn heels for years so think I’d be most comfortable in nice neat ankle boots rather than proper shoes.

Do I wear black or nude tights?
Should I buy navy boots?
Is black with navy a no-no?

Gold or silver pumps/ballet shoes if you don't want heels? I always think with a plain dark colour like navy, metallics are lovely.

I think I definitely need heels with the style of dress, it’s quite formal in the grand scheme of my wardrobe. I just don’t think I’ll feel safe in normal shoes. Also I don’t have the slimmest of ankles. Are heeled ankle boots a no?

Ankle boots at a formal event may be hard to pull off. Better off with a nice low heel. Gold would be nice or pale pink

The event will be full of young people, 20s/30s, and I’m not sure they do traditional court shoes? My dress is like this but with a less flowy bottom half.

I think the outfit in the picture looks great, but it looks more everyday rather than formal. I would go with the suggestion of metallic shoes. Flat slingbacks with a pointed toe. No tights or nude ones if you have to wear them. And metallic statement earrings.

Hmmm, mines definitely not for everyday. Am I gonna have to buy some proper lady shoes? Not doing sandals or sling backs or open toe. Should I go navy or silver?

Knee high navy suede boots with a heel, need to be very streamlined, not chunky

Oblivionnnnn · 24/01/2026 20:49

Oh I would totally wear cute little ankle boots with that! I have nice velvet navy ones with a rounded toe and zips in the back. Obviously you don’t want navy but I think it’s a good look.

Ladies, it’s gonna have to be boots. I just dug out the heels I haven’t worn for years and I cannot bloody walk in them, I look like I’ve had some sort of catastrophic medical episode. What’s happened? I used to be able to skip about quite happily in stilettos but would almost certainly end up in A&E if I wore these. How depressing.

So, tiny streamlined sock boots with a pointy toe and maybe a more kitten heel? Black ok? I’ll get a lot more wear out of black than navy or silver.
