I hadn't already done it in Lockdown and hated it!

I'm autistic and actually HATE going to the hairdressers. It stresses me out so badly so I haven't been in about 2 years. I cut my own fringe but my hair is so long.

I'm crap at keeping it washed. Its way too long. I hate drying it. It gets ratty and its hurts to brush it.

Its driving me crazy but going to get it cut is so anxiety inducing to me. Ive been trying to book an appointment for a fortnight but just can't do it.

I keep watching home haircut tutorials but I know I will mess it up.

I feel your pain . I have no advice but I also hate my hair . Hate brushing it , washing it and hate the hairdressers. It’s like a phobia. I hate the small talk . My hair ends up a matted mess . I had to have my daughter cut off my hair a couple of months ago coz it was just one big matt . I was convinced I was going to have to shave it off coz it was so damaged and just kept growing more and more into the big Matt of hair. I haven’t been to the hairdressers since way before lockdown coz I can’t bare the judgement.

I ended up cutting it off and wearing a wig.
I bought one for a tenner from Amazon and it was actually really good . So lifelike . My Daughter LOVES her hair , spends a fortune at the hairdressers and she is appalled at how I just can’t take care of my hair.

weirdly I’m the same with my dog , I can’t bare taking him to the groomers but I actually found one that had no judgement of me and I’ve done really well at keeping up with his regular appointments and it’s helped me not neglect him .

Maybe finding the right hairdresser might help? Someone you trust ? I think maybe this is what I need too , perhaps I’ve found my people in this thread 🤣

I haven't been to a hair dresser for 3 years since I moved house. I feel you so much.

OneBusyFinch · 18/01/2026 14:23

Most hairdressers are neuroinclusive now or at least aware. If you haven’t already, email them explaining your needs and asking for an appointment where those needs can be met. Don’t be afraid to say exactly what you need.

if the current hairdresser can’t meet your needs, then try others until you find somewhere.

another option is to go to a barbers. Show them a picture of what you want and they will crack on and get it done quickly. They are excellent at taking into account your head and face shape. Going early means it will be quiet.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/01/2026 14:28

The pictures you post are gorgeous but I don’t think you can just get your hair cut like that it needs a lot of styling

have you got friends you can ask for recommendations of someone who is really nice and understanding?

I also am really funny about hairdressers so I get it. I do go several times a year but really have to work myself up

JBJ · 18/01/2026 14:34

I’ve cut mine myself for years. Had a brain injury and now can’t stand anyone touching my head, so I’ve learnt through trial and error to do it myself.

GreatGooglyMooglies · 18/01/2026 18:46

Ive just cut it myself and really like it 😬

Messed up with some too short layers but its not that noticeable

Excellent well done

gallivantsaregood · 18/01/2026 19:46

@GreatGooglyMoogliesdoing it yourself is very liberating.

That sounds heavenly, youre not in Manchester are you 🤣

I can recommend Vanilla Tramp in Didsbury Manchester, the owner Lily is ND and absolutely brilliant.

I’m sure she could suggest a time when the salon is quiet and be very supportive of your difficulties.

Coincidently she’s a brilliant artist for both colour and cuts.

I cut my own hair after watching Brad Mondo's butterfly tutorial and it came out really nice, maybe try it and just see? Best case scenario you have nice hair and don't need to worry about going to the hairdressers.
Worst case scenario you'll have to book an appointment anyway and try and disguise the dodgy cut in a bun if you don't mind wearing your hair like that.

EDIT: I also missed that you cut it yourself, it looks great 😃 so pleased you went for it, DIY hair at home is the way forward!!

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/01/2026 21:00

Great well done! Looks good

Ineffable23 · 18/01/2026 21:03

That looks good! If you haven't bought yourself some hairdressing scissors, I would strongly recommend it. They'll make life a lot easier. My friend who cuts my hair also has a little comb thing she uses which helps a lot, with a pointy end.

Mlk8 · 18/01/2026 21:05

Its very cute and you look younger, even without seeing your face! Well done on the weightloss too, what a beautiful glow up.

Duckchops · 18/01/2026 22:12

As another person who literally cannot go to the hairdresser, WELL DONE, it looks amazing!

I fortunately like having a very simple bob, and get a friend to cut it for me. I've tried everything else 🤣

Interesting what you thought about shaving it off. I still wonder about trying that when I'm finding it difficult having hair 🤔

To be fair when I shaved it I was in a very bad place. It felt more like a punishment to myself rather than a liberation.

Maybe I would feel differently now but I'm not brave enought to find out!

The urge usually hits me in the middle of the night and has passed by morning

In the late 90s I had a short back and sides, spiky on top, that I dyed pillar box red. I enjoyed that, briefly, but it was a complete nightmare trying to find people to maintain it at all, and I ended up with the most dreadful style so grew it out

I sometimes wonder if things have changed enough that I could go to the barbers with my son and his dad, have a short cut, and maybe manage that 🤔

Kitterkitkat · 19/01/2026 16:06

Looks pretty; when I started reading this thread just now I was hoping you'd get something to cover your ears, it's still cold out! Roll on March

spiderlight · 19/01/2026 16:25

That looks amazing - well done!

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/01/2026 16:33

That haircut looks AMAZING! No one will ever guess it’s a DIY cut. And your hair colour is beautiful.

I’m autistic too and am currently locked into a battle of wills with my hair (which after a lifetime of being straight has now decided to become curly/wavy due to the perimenopause)! I’d love hair that looks like yours!!

2026willbebetter · 19/01/2026 16:37

You’re hair is beautiful and that’s a really good cut!

GreatGooglyMooglies · 20/01/2026 21:01

I completely fucked it up.

There were long bits at the back i tried to sort and i just hacked it. Its completely uneven

Have booked in at hairdressers tomorrow 😖
