Looking for help with Mother of the Groom outfits

Hi,

My very good friend's son (and my godson) is marrying this summer.

My friend is 60, very elegant, tall and a size 10. She is looking for a special outfit and is not afraid to wear bright colours and slim fits and she'd love something above the ankle type length.

She has a good budget but not full on designer. I'm going more Me&Em but she wants to go more full on than their more understated styles.

Would be very grateful for any names of boutique shops, websites, or interesting designers and we are prepared to travel for the right shop. We are in Manchester area but regularly down south.

Thanks for your help!

Harvey Nics or Selfridges are great for getting a feel for different styles.

Brands like Needle and Thread, Holland Cooper, Rixo, Self Portrait and Ganni etc are worth a look.

I follow Snooty Frox in Harrogate on Instagram. They have some beautiful dresses.

They do appointmemts and if I ever need a dress I plan to have a weekend break there and try some on!

I was going to say she should just browse

Net-a-Porter

Mytheresa

SSense

but honestly - this is such utter, utter perfection there’s no need to look further:

My son is getting married early summer in Spain, and it won't be super formal trad MOG/B outfits. So far I have dresses here or on the way from All Saints, Ghost and Marimekko (my favourite, so fingers crossed), and I'm eyeing up Stine Goya. All my Facebook and Instagram ads are for dresses at the moment, I'm loving it 😁

More traditional and more modern sold by Joel Alexander in Darlington.
I follow on fb just because I love seeing the new styles and MOB/MOG real photos. (there is a website too).

Might help her narrow down her preferences.

I love this! And your friend is tall enough to carry it.

Weddings are difficult for others to help with though, very much depends on the vibe ofbyhe wedding. I've had friends in evening dress, (full on, full length glitter), silk jump suit and very traditional hat, dress and jacket.
Any clues as to the wedding, other wedding part members?

Oh that’s gorgeous! Too black and too small for me! but I am now having a good look at the rest of the site.

Dea Kudibal do lovely silk prints in the summer. I bought one for my DSis wedding last year. It was so comfortable and hung beautifully. I bought another unworn version off Vinted for just general summer wear.
The prints are bold and they do various different designs in each print so lots of choice.

Crwysmam · 13/01/2026 22:42

This is the dress I wore for my DSis wedding. I dressed it up with a big hat in the neutral colour in the dress and added feathers to highlight the various colours.
It was a very relaxed 3rd wedding for my sister who is 60. Although she looked about 30, her dress was a stretch lace empire line dress, simple but looked absolutely amazing on her. So an instructed look was a good choice. The dress was a little roomy, I had lost weight between buying it and the wedding but it was a hot day so having a loose fit was a bonus.

This shop in York offers a range of options too, some more traditional, some of the occasion wear less so but more contemporary. York is an easy train ride from Manchester (Harrogate and Darlington easy from York too (20 minutes train ride)).

The Spanish designer Carla Ruiz has less formal MOB/G wear as has Kevan Jon. Scroll to the bottom of each page for some great sale offers.

There are actually two weddings - both her DC are marrying this year!!! Both are in the summer and neither are too formal. At the moment, she is just trying to get names of different shops, websites and designers. She doesn't have to stick to a colour for either

I have been looking through some of the old threads on here too which are really helpful.

today we also discussed Vinted and pre- loved outfits and possibly renting - which I didn't think she'd go for.

Yes, the information here, especially the names of designers, is a huge asset when searching Vinted.
Loads of ‘once worn’ - because that’s what happens, we all buy and wear once for the wedding.
Also some ‘change of mind’ too.
A great way of buying quality for much, much less.

I bought a beautiful velvet dress for Christmas . We have a great independent, high end ladies dress shop locally. And a couple of doors down is a dress agency who regularly sell on items bought in the other shop. The dress I found had just come in, unworn and from earlier in the season.

Have a hunt around for dress agencies, there are plenty that specialise in MOB outfits and can offer alteration service. It can be frustrating when you spot something online from last season that is perfect but no longer available.

If you use Vinted, ask for photos of the exact measurements, often high end outfits have been altered and are difficult to judge size wise. It’s great for hats though. I bought my hat from John Lewis but then bought a couple of fascinators to take apart and use to decorate it. There are some really nice hats on the site that you can do the same with.

My biggest bargain was a pair of suede sling backs, worn once, Russell & Bromley for £20. They would have cost £200 new.

Even the beautiful model looks dowdy and scruffy in that dress.
