What hairstyle to ask for, for more volume?

I have thick just past shoulder length hair.
wavy can be frizzy if not styled.

I usually blow dry my hair and, to my mind, had mastered a fairly decent blow drying using a hot brush tool.
However having attended some events in December and being caught in photos from side/back I realise my hair actually looks flat/lifeless, stuck to my crown despite being thick.
So I went to my usual hairdresser pre-Christmas and asked for a style that would give more volume/ movement at the crown.
Discussed layers/ more shaggy look. Didn’t have a reference photo, thought it best to discuss with my specific hair type in mind - a mistake in hindsight.

Anyway, fast forward 3 hours and she’s given me the exact same cut as I always get, one long layer plus a ‘framing’ layer around face. It was 8pm and I’ve been out of the house since 8am by that point, I was desperate to leave so I just paid her and went. Looking afterwards at her instagram page it looks like literally everyone gets that same cut from her :/

So I want to try again with a different hairdresser, try and find someone more up to date whose work images reflect a variety of styles (not yet identified this mythical hairdresser),
but I don’t know the terminology for what I want. Could someone throw out some styles, so I can look them up online and find a definitive reference photo please?

Wolf cut?

Overtheatlantic · 11/01/2026 17:43

Solidarity but no recommendation I’m afraid. I made the same request and got shorter but no height at the crown.

Wolf cut?

Thank you, I’ve looked that up, some I think are a bit too cutting edge for me to pull off but this (picture) labelled ‘shaggy wolfcut’ might work!

knowing what to google is half the battle

edit: no7 on this list of the photo doesn’t work

Yes I just seemed to get shorter! Which is annoying because now I think it might be too short to get the style pictured above, which I like.

I’ve asked for this so many times at so many places,
said I’d like lots and lots of layers all over and got the same as you one long layer and face feathering 🙄
I even went to a “cool” “alternative”
Hairdressers and it was the exact same outcome. Hope you find somewhere, I’ve given up and cut my own hair with pony tail cut

There are lots of different versions of the wolf, some shorter or with a fringe, which are less dramatic but still interesting and flattering.

I think the ponytail haircut method would give you a shag. Some of it is having a flat back of the head and hair growth to the side, leaning on a headrest or pillow can make it flatter at the back. Maybe also add dry shampoo to the back portion ans crown.

You’ve just brought back memories of my mum backcombing her hair, would be 1980s, I wonder if that’s worth a go. For all I know she might still do so! I’ll have to ask her how.

My teen daughter gave herself a great haircut using a technique she saw on TikTok. Maybe I could get her do the ponytail method on me. She’d definitely be more competent than I would. What’s the worst that could happen! 🙃

Do hairdressers just have a ‘go to’ style they do on everyone regardless of what is asked for?! certainly seems to be the case for mine, don’t know why I’ve only just realised.

@FirstDayonthePlaneti think you’re spot on!

Yes remember when everyone went in wanting a bob or a pixie or whatever but they still came out with a Rachel? 😁

I have thick shoulder length hair and I have square layers. My hairdresser told me that’s what I had on when she went in maternity leave and someone else would be cutting it.
My Dd asked for square layers the other week at the hairdresser, got what she wanted and the hairdresser was impressed that she knew what she wanted!

I’ve never heard of square layers, I shall have a look at that, thank you.

Hairdressers near me all seem to focus on twisting the hair using an air wrap or similar, not prioritising the cut. I don’t want that - I want a good cut.
