Cutting own hair (long and straight)

Does anyone have any recommendations for online tutorials for cutting your own hair? It’s quite long and very straight.

I’m also looking for recommendations for hairdressing scissors that I can buy online.

There were a lot on Youtube during lockdown and I had a crack. It's didn't go brilliantly. One technique was tying your hair in a high ponytail and then putting hair ties at regular intervals down the hair so it's taut. And then going for the chop. Satisfying but you still look at bit raggedy.

Thank you. I don’t want to go into detail, but I’m actually in a situation that’s very similar to ‘lockdown’. To be honest, I’m unlikely to see many people for at least a couple of months and I currently wear it in a pony tail/bun a lot of the time. So it doesn’t need to be perfect, but ‘good enough’ to not be awful! My hair grows so fast.

It should be relatively easy to do if you just want a straightforward trim on hair that is one length. Anything with layers is probably going to end badly.

The ones I've seen that look doable are where the hair is sectioned into low pony tails (not high pony tails - this would be for a layered cut I think). Google cut own hair blunt one length and you should get some tutorials. Watch loads before committing and cut off less than you think.

Autumnleaves82 · 04/01/2026 08:09

Thank you @RancidRuby I did Google this yesterday and found so many videos, so just thought I’d check if anyone had any particular recommendations. The method you’ve described is what I’ve seen in most videos so I’ll watch a few more of those.

I like Brad mondo videos. He has loads of different options but if your hair is long the unicorn should work well.

I bought some scissors on amazon for £5 and have been cutting my own hair for a while, I just put it in and ponytail and then trim the ends, has been fine so far!

Autumnleaves82 · 04/01/2026 08:23

Thank you @megacat and @1984Winston I’ll order some scissors today.

Out of nosiness, I'm intrigued by Brad Monroe's set up. Is that girl with the gorgeous long red hair in his videos his girlfriend? Or is he gay? They look like they arr together but then sometimes not.

I’ve always been under the assumption that he’s gay?
Could be wrong! No idea!

Either way, that man is a cut/colour wizard who’s saved me from many a mishap 🫠😂

I don't have straight hair (it's wavy) and wear it tied up 99% of the time.

I did the high ponytail method. You absolutely need very sharp scissors - mine were Amazon specials!

It's fine - not really noticeable when tied up. I wouldn't have straightened it and worn it down tho.

Waitingforaprick · 04/01/2026 09:12

I just done mine myself. Cut 5 inches off. It was perfect. I used this video.

It was incredibly easy. Just make sure the ponytails are at the same level.

This is just the type of recommendation I was looking for. Thank you.

I have a long bob and cut mine regularly in between hairdresser appointments as it grows so fast! If yours is longer it will be really easy.

I've always found it very straightforward, they key is to go little by little and not pull wet hair down too much: is stretches and you can be cutting off more than you think.

lindyloo57 · 04/01/2026 18:24

I trim my own hair, been doing it since lockdown, I have medium length think just above the back bra band, I split it in two, pull it over the shoulders and trim both sides it gives a little u shape at the back, I would love to do the high ponytail method but I don't want short layers around the face, and when I watch YouTube most end up with them.

tumbletoast · 04/01/2026 18:28

This is the one I have used a lot, which is the same person (but different video) as a pp shared:
