Help me find something to wear to a wedding please!

I need to find a dress to wear to a wedding next month. I’ve not been to a wedding for about 20 years or bought myself a fancy outfit for ages, I’m a jeans and jumper kind of girl!

I'm going shopping tomorrow (the actual shops, not online), can anyone recommend any good high street places to shop for lovely dresses and shoes?? Thank you

Have you browsed the websites of all your local shops to ascertain which have things you might be interested in?

From your OP no one reading can know which shops you have access to. Or your clothes size or budget.

Someone will be along in a minute to recommend a John Lewis personal shopper

I live near a city that has a mix of high street places / designer / higher end high street. John Lewis, Frasers, Coast, Reiss etc etc. Budget for dress prob no more than £200 ish. Shoes £100.

I’m usually a size 10 and 5’4”

Are Coast still going on the high st? Fraser’s? Personally I find shipping in shops disappointing.

I would get a selection from on line stores. Of the high st, John Lewis would have the best selection, but are you going all day to evening in the same dress or changing for the evening? How is the day planned? I’m a fan of jewel colours in the winter and a trouser suit in velvet is always a good look in winter. Just add a plain blouse with no collar and you are sortied. Change it for a sparkly top for the evening. Think about shoes! Mid heel or flat if comfort matters. My other go to look is palazzo pants with a velvet blazer. A silky fluid fabric is swishy and glam. Always add good jewellery.

If you want a dress, a plain jewel colour - don’t have a busy print. Add a toning coat.

Going into actual shops is a great idea. You can have a good browse on the rails and usually assistants are very helpful. You can get a feel for colour, texture and fabric, and take a selection to try on.
What colour/style do you favour?
Have you thought about French Connection, Zara and Mango? They might be a bit more modern.

@OhDear111 so that shows how long it’s been since I shopped for anything fancy! I’ve no idea if Coast has gone but that was the last fancy thing I bought 😳

I’ll be wearing the same thing all day so just need one outfit. Something warm prob as it will be in January and I’ve another wedding next November I can wear the same thing to.

I ordered 3 dresses online from Hobbs that looked amazing online and were awful in real life! Didn’t fit and didn’t make me look like the model 🤣

Thanks @OctopusFriend that’s why I want to go to the actual shops, for a good look around. Hadn’t thought of those shops so will look there. I like teal, blue, red, fuschia pink, ochre. Will prob steer from black so it’s something a bit different. I like colour! Also like emerald green. I pretty much like all the colours!

You just did!

I’d go for a velvet jumpsuit. There are LOADS on sale at the moment and I think velvet looks amazing. Not too heavy round the top so you don’t overheat.

Lots of the size 10s have sold out but have attached a pic of one that hasn’t.

That's good. Yes, I'd avoid black at a wedding!
I never shop for shoes or clothes online, I like to see before I buy.
If you go to a shopping mall or a good high street, go into as many places as you can. It's years since I've shopped in Hobbs, they used to be quite good, but are disappointing of late.
If you like strong colour and texture, you could always try Joe Browns - I bought a great velvet jacket from there.
I'm serious about Zara and Mango, no need to go high end, and I think this is the moment just to try lots of stuff on and get a sense of what suits you.

Remember a jump suit is a real pain in the loo - hopefully not a wet floor!

You might like these dresses. All at M&S .

Good choices, @OhDear111 , that caped one is interesting.
I couldn't agree more about jumpsuits! Such a pain going to the toilet!

PermanentTemporary · 27/12/2025 23:42

I suppose having lived variously through eras of the Lycra body, dungarees and control tights/pants, I find jumpsuits relatively straightforward 😂

OhDear111 · 27/12/2025 23:45

@PermanentTemporary My body is quite long and they are a faff at times! Not so many around these days.
