Do you often have to have jeans shortened?

I was trying on jeans today and they were all far too long! I did find some that I like, but after I've washed them I anticipate they'll still need shortening and inch or two, as I will wear them with flats.

I always think it's a pity to shorten jeans as they usually have some kind of wash or finish on the bottom (if you see what I mean).

The thing is, I'm 5'8"1/2! So if too-long jeans are a problem for me, I expect they are for most women!

The brands I was trying mostly didn't have different legs lengths either.

I rarely need to hem my jeans and I'm just under 5'4".
Try different brands.

LargeJugs · 27/12/2025 15:39

Never I need a 34 inch inside leg!

Alexadidzammomarryjackie · 27/12/2025 15:40

I'm relatively tall but have little legs, it's one of my great sadnesses in life. This means trousers are often too long. I like heels so do wear them sometimes but with jeans I tend to just turn them up.

Overtheatlantic · 27/12/2025 15:42

I’m 162 cm and always need to hem jeans unless I buy them from M&S. It’s infuriating when the Short length is still a 27 inch inseam.

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 27/12/2025 15:43

No, and I'm 5ft, I have to choose carefully though.

Gingernaut · 27/12/2025 15:44

I have a 23 inch inside leg

Every pair of jeans and trousers need shortening, including 3/4, 7/8 and cropped length

TheOGCCL · 27/12/2025 16:19

I'm 5"4 but with a 27 inch keg and usually have to shorten jeans even if short length. The only ones I don't are cropped jeans which are normally about right, although recently I got some cropped bootcut and still needed 2cm off. I think small margins make a massive difference with trousers and jeans falling nicely.

I think having the right length is more important than losing any edging and using orange thread usually does the trick. I did have some once where they kept the original hem by folding it back on sole clever way but don't think it's really worth it.

Shmithecat2 · 27/12/2025 16:20

I wish. 37" inside leg here, they're never long enough 😭

thedevilinablackdress · 27/12/2025 16:21

I always think it's a pity to shorten jeans as they usually have some kind of wash or finish on the bottom

The tailors I use are able to (somehow by magic) attach the original bottom piece.

mamakoukla · 27/12/2025 16:23

Yes unless it’s cropped in which case it’s often perfect length

cannaethink · 27/12/2025 16:29

I’m the same height as you, and always have trainers or flat shoes, and often have to take the hem down to make them longer. I can’t do this with all jeans and trousers but ones with a decent hem width are easy enough to do.

Dogsrfunny · 27/12/2025 16:57

There is a way to shorten jeans and keep the original hem, this is one of many links around

Crystallllll · 27/12/2025 16:58

No never have this problem and I’m slightly shorter than you. Where are you buying them?

somanychristmaslights · 27/12/2025 17:13

I’m 5’7” and I just got some wide leg ones from Zara and they’re really long! Only come in one length so loads of people must have to have them taken up

realsavagelike · 28/12/2025 05:19

Yes, often. See also flannel pyjamas, which try to kill me by wrapping around my feet. I bought petite for my newest pyjamas, which worked out well. I'm 5 foot 4 and definitely not petite in any way.

LavenderBlue19 · 28/12/2025 05:28

Very rarely, and I just wouldn't buy them if they did need it. I'm 5ft 5 with long legs for my height. The only place that are consistently too long for me are Zara (not that they've fit me in about 10 years 😂)

FancyCatSlave · 28/12/2025 05:31

I only buy jeans and trousers that come in a short length option (not petite). I’m 5ft 4.

SouthernNights59 · 28/12/2025 05:38

I haven't had to have mine hemmed - but only because I spend a lot of time searching for a pair which aren't too long. And I have to say, they are almost as rare as hen's teeth. I feel your pain OP, I am 5ft 7 and the majority of jeans are far too long for me, it's beyond irritating.
