Can anyone recommend some socks for new Dr Martens boots please

I've just bought some chelsea boot style Dr Martens and want to get some socks to help break them in. I know you can get specific DM socks but wondered if there was a cheaper alternative so I can buy a few pairs (ideally plain black)

Primark do loads of boots socks

The DM double layer socks are absolutely brilliant. Schuh sometimes do a three pack on offer. They will be better than anything else you could find, I promise.

Yes, the double layer socks. They are excellent.

My favourites are the 1000 mile double layer walking socks https://www.1000mile.co.uk/products/womens-fusion-double-layer-walking-sock as they stop you getting blisters (even my rubbish skin which blisters at the slightest rub) and cushion places that might get pressure on them.

Thank you for suggestions.

Unfortunately Schuh don't appear to have an offer on for 3 pairs at the moment.

It galls me that p&p is £3.99 for a pair of socks though!

I have a new pair of docs to break in too.

I have a few pairs and have never bothered with special socks, just two pairs of sports socks, and I highly recommend walking on a treadmill if you have access to one as you can just jump off when you've had enough and not worry about javing to get back home/to the car etc.

I found wearing two normal thin socks, rather than thick boot socks, good when breaking in my DMs.

BluntQuoter · 26/12/2025 21:58

Sounds gross but Vaseline your feet - helps protect against blisters. Two pairs of socks is also good as PP said. Basically anything that reduces friction. You don't need special socks.

A sanitary towel stuck in the back of the boot helps when breaking in. Ok if you’re not out visiting anywhere you may need to remove your boots. 😉

Honestly, the double doc socks are a bit expensive but really nice socks and also warm. If you are going to have more than one pair of DMs or similar in your life they are worth the money. Or any other double layer socks. Or just layer up twice yourself. The double layer is the thing that makes the most difference.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 27/12/2025 20:27

lol @ the sanitary pad trick @Humptyandhambel . It would just be my luck to need to remove them and the pad to come out stuck to my foot/sock!

I may stick to double layers of normal socks unless I come across some of the Double Doc Socks on offer or in a real shop (to avoid the p&p).

To be fair I broke in my DM shoes without special socks but I think I'm just concerned they might rub my ankles as well as heel. Boots should arrive Monday hopefully

@OhMyGiddyAunt you can but silicon plaster type things. I got mine off Amazon as every year, once I quit wearing sandals and return to shoes and boots, I have to wear them in again. These plaster things are great, they adhere to the skin and you peel them off at the end of the day. Or you can keep them on, but I find that a bit weird. They are like a thick but comfy second skin.

I wore a brand new pair of smooth leather 1460s yesterday (the type that do need breaking in) with only a single pair of thinnish socks. Had intended to bring an extra pair with me but forgot to put them in my bag. Surprisingly they were absolutely fine - I did about 6000 steps so not loads but apart from them feeling stiff I had no discomfort at all.
