What to do with my hair? Pic included

Hi what do you think of my hair? Has anyone got any advice please. As you can see I’m oldish and I like my grey. Its thick, fine and a mix if wavy and curly. I had it cut a few weeks. I had a major operation about 8 months ago and haven’t been able to get out for a hair cut much. This was a mobile hairdresser I found recommended on Facebook. It looks like she thinned it out too much and cut it unevenly. it’s too short at my crown and goes frizzy. It seems to go into strands like rats tails too.

Can anyone give me some ideas for what to do - grow it? Have it short? go to a curl specialist? find a good cutter? What style might suit me?

Really can't tell from that photo ,sorry OP.

Is that with your hair wet or dry? It is really hard to see what is happening. Can you post a range of photos with dry, combed hair so we can see better.

Here’s another pic
It’s dry and brushed - I’ve noticed it looks damp when it’s dry - perhaps I should stop conditioning it?

It looks quite thick which is great. Do you want to add some kind of brown/blonde bits in? Do you use a light serum after washing?

I wouldn't go for a short pixie crop. My mate has very similar hair to yours and she had a very short haircut recently which looked a bit too extreme.

TeaRoseTallulah · 22/12/2025 15:29

I think using much less conditioner would help, yes. Just put a touch on the ends rather than all over.

OverlyFragrant · 22/12/2025 15:30

Have you tried using a curl cream and then diffusing?

KnickerlessParsons · 22/12/2025 15:37

I quite like it as it is I think. It’s hard to tell from the photos.

OvernightBloats · 22/12/2025 15:42

Perhaps use less conditioner. Maybe the shampoo you are using is too moisturising?

PInkyStarfish · 22/12/2025 15:42

It looks excessively oily due to not washing or an overload of product making it look dull and greasy.

it might be the lighting but there is a yellow tinge and it makes your hair look dirty.

I found some photos that show clean and healthy grey hair. I would grow yours and consider a toner to take away any yellowing.

It does look a bit greasy.

How do you wash it? What kind of shampoo do you use? Do you rinse loads and add some conditioner just to the ends?

Do you blow dry it?

canklesmctacotits · 22/12/2025 15:58

I think you should lean into the curls. I know they're high maintenance but you've got the best of all worlds with wavy hair. The cut seems fine but yes you need to cut down on products, let your hair breathe a bit and just let it bounce/not be dragged down by product so much.

Hallywally · 22/12/2025 17:18

OP you might want to get that photo deleted. You can clearly see your face through the black out.

thatswhatiwant · 22/12/2025 17:23

Ok @Hallywally

My hair isn’t dirty as I was it every other day. I use a shampoo for sensitive scalp and SLS free - although I swapped brands recently. I wonder if I’m a bit run down after my operation and it’s showing in my hair . Perhaps I need to work on improving the condition of my hair.

I've only seen the first photo but agree that it looks damp or greasy. What shampoo are you using ? Have you ever tried a hair mask? I use L'Oréal Absolute Repair or Ouai but I know you can get more reasonably priced ones . I also agree the grey needs a bit of a pep!

Your hair looks as if it's not been combed or brushed.

I think you ought to think about the colour. It's ageing as it's very washed out and doesn't do anything for your skin tone. I'd suggest some warm low lights in a deeper blonde/light brown, maybe go slightly shorter.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/12/2025 17:32

My hairdresser said condition only twice a week.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 22/12/2025 17:35

My hair always looked greasy, despite me washing it every 3 days. I've started using Johnny's Chop Shop - Instant Texture Spray and I can now go 5 days between washes. Its like a dry shampoo but gives texture and volume too 😊

Hereforthedramaz · 22/12/2025 18:23

Sorry if I’ve missed it OP but have you literally had it down today? As in you haven’t washed it yourself yet?

because my, also wavy-curly, hair HATES being cut and does that weird kind of separation thing until I wash it myself and let it air dry. It also air dries longer an just less dramatic than the hairdresser leaves it!

worcesterpear · 22/12/2025 18:36

I can't advise on the cut but I find certain shampoos leave my hair like this - sort of wet and claggy, so it might be worth trying different shampoos. Purple shampoos can be drying, so you could use one every other wash with conditioner, then on the alternate wash see about one of those treatment masks that you put onto dry hair and leave for 20 minutes to an hour before you wash it off, then just use a gentle shampoo and no conditioner.
