Skinny jeans

I have begun to feel frumpy and outdated wearing skinny jeans. Can’t really afford to refresh my wardrobe atm. I lived in them for years either with knee high boots or Chelsea type boots.

Is there a way to make them feel modern? I am middle aged, petite, size 10 in case that’s relevant.

to make matters worse, in the last few weeks before I started feeling they were outdated, I bought several bargain pairs on Vinted.. so my wardrobe is now full of a garment which doesn’t make me feel great 🙈

(Also I never realised they had ever gone out of fashion - clearly I’m way out of touch! 😬)

they haven't gone out of fashion, you can still buy them anywhere. I love my skinny jeans & I think the barrel leg trend is horrible. I'll be wearing high waist skinnies for as long as I can 😍

megacat · 21/12/2025 20:41

I also have had a lot of my clothes several years, I suppose what I mean is it’s obvious when it’s a dated item.

I’m not judging, I’m sure people think the same of me wearing my floral midi in summer 😀

I have Sainsbury’s wide legs and I’ve worn them to death. I’ve seen people on here rave about the barrel legs but I’ve never tried them.

Backtorealityerr · 21/12/2025 21:02

Well i quite confidently bought a pair of M&S black skinny jeans today. Shall wear them with pride 😉

AlertOpalCrab · 21/12/2025 21:31

Personally I hate a skinny jean and think they look very outdated. Barrel and wide leg jeans are the other extreme though. If you think a skinny jean looks frumpy I would go for a stove pipe or straight leg. They’re close enough to a skinny to still feel like you but a bit refreshed and shouldn’t need a whole wardrobe refresh to work (assuming you wear slightly looser or oversized tops to balance out a skinny jean).
I personally like a wide leg (even a barrel leg!) but you need a much slimmer top to make it look balanced.

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 21:32

What footwear is best with “stove pipe” (goes to google…) or straight leg jeans?

I don't wear skinnies or own them anymore but I think you can definitely still get away with them in the depths of winter as they work with a long (knee or below) coat and tucked into boots. (I'd wear fleece lined leggings to get the same look these days.)

Anything else is a bit dicey, but you never know which retro look will pop back into fashion next, maybe we'll all be wearing waterfall cardigans with them next Spring!

Flowers999 · 21/12/2025 21:47

I'm 5ft6 size 10 and love skinnies.

Skinnies woth tall boots are in fashion always. I wear mine with new balance 327.

I'm not a wide leg jean person.

I also like new look or h n m mom jeans. Slim fit but not so skinny they are 'uncool'

I've recently lost 6 and a half stone and you best believe I wore my skinnies with pride a few days ago 🤣🤣

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 21:49

Congrats on the weight loss flowers!

lol at a previous poster mentioning waterfall cardigans; I may feel frumpy in my skin tight skinny jeans… but I don’t own one of those

As someone who wears knee high boots or wellies continuously in the Winter. No other jeans will do. Skinnies all the way.

henlake7 · 21/12/2025 22:20

I think they are probably always going to be around TBH, just like leggings.
I feel like people with skinny legs look better in skinny jeans though.
(I have big calves so on me they are basically denim leggings!).

RillHunner · 21/12/2025 21:32

What footwear is best with “stove pipe” (goes to google…) or straight leg jeans?

I would go with a slimmer shoe to maintain balance. Ballet flats, low profile sneakers that are streamlined and classic loafers are all good. Something like a New Balance 530 is visually too heavy. A slim Chelsea boot with an almond toe (jeans over the boot) also looks great in the winter.
I think the most important thing with a straight leg or stovepipe jean is the actual length on your leg. You want it grazing the top of your foot or shoe, as opposed to too much fabric bunching up or ankle cropped.

OneCleverPinkFawn · 22/12/2025 04:22

At this point I don't care much about fashion as barrel jeans really seem trendy but woudn't work for my body at all. Skinny jeans are all I'm wearing though it's getting kinda different to get a new pair since they are nowhere to be seen. However, the fashion is usually a cycle, so they are making a comeback in the nearest future surely.

springintoaction2 · 22/12/2025 04:27

Don't worry @RillHunner I'm still wearing bootleg jeans 😂

CharnwoodFire · 22/12/2025 04:37

I like skinnies.

My issue with wider legs is you need a tighter fitting top to balance them.

I bloat massively so even when I'm not pregnant, by evening time I look 32 weeks pregnant. Which is awkward.

CanYouHereMeRoar · 22/12/2025 05:18

I am size 12, 5ft5 and in the winter I still wear my black skinnies that I have owned for many of years. Generally I pair with boots. I know it's dated but I love wearing them.

MerryAndBrightLaLaLa · 22/12/2025 06:00

I mean they’ve been out of fashion for a few years now. But def coming back - see claudia winkleman op.

TurquoiseDress · 22/12/2025 06:05

I love my skinny jeans and have done for over a decade now! Really don’t care what’s in fashion or ‘on trend’

Aged 47 5ft 3 size 8/10 depending on where I’m shopping (if M&S can even be size 6 which is insane!)

Looked at barrel jeans, not tried them but suspect I would like terrible in them…even if they are ‘in fashion’

TurquoiseDress · 22/12/2025 06:08

I also love bootleg jeans too…suspect the 00s will be calling me for their jeans back! Grin

Best thing about getting older is literally not giving a shite about what others think of my clothes/am I on trend etc

KeepYaHeadUp · 22/12/2025 06:16

I like M&S carrot jeans. I’m short and buy short or regular depending on the look I want. I can’t get on with barrel. Mom jeans can be good but they need to fit and not be too baggy and really need a belt and tucked in top. I’ve seen lots of slim leg around which maybe are the new skinny

Gettingbysomehow · 22/12/2025 06:36

I have never seen anyone who looks good in skinny jeans they are awful.
With maybe the exception of my Dsis who has a model figure and would look good in a bin bag. I am very slim but look laughable in them.
I wear straight leg jeans, boot cut and flared jeggings all of which look good.
I can't wear wide leg, barrel carrot etc Im the wrong shape for them, too curvy round the hips.

Theonlyfatmiddleagedwomannotonmonjaro · 22/12/2025 07:16

Its not just the jeans, its all the tops to go with them too. Changing your jeans means changing the tops and footwear too, I think.

Im 5ft at a push. Vv short legs. A new meno belly (yay). I am no kind of fashion expert which will probably mean my thoughts will unintentionally offend the cool and trendy types.

I wear skinnys or fitted slim with a vest top and over shirt (layers for meno flushes/length forthe meno tummy) and boots - either ankle or knee highs. Even flat boots add a tiny bit of height, which I desperately need.

I bought a pair if barrel jeans but need a more fitted shorter top and cannot work out what footwear, other than trainers. Because of the exposed tummy and the trainers I feel dumpy fat and a scruff in them.

I look at others and tbh few people look smart in all these looser fitting jeans. Mainly the ones with thier jeans trailing on the floor at the back, frayed and dirty. I find in my old age im fed up of casual dressing being so casual and shapeless. I might feel different if I was a size 10 and a normal height, but few short curvy people can carry off the baggy loose shapeless look well.

FromageTime · 22/12/2025 07:24

It took me ages to dump the skinnies, but now I love wide leg jeans. There are so many styles around, you will find something that suits you that isn’t the dated skinny style.

Charlenedickens · 22/12/2025 07:27

There are so many styles of jeans available now. Yes skinny look very dated, but are the onky ones which work with knee high boots.

barrel is just one of them, as are wide leg, I’d have a look at boyfriend, mom, flare, bootcut, slouchy, straights relaxed etc, try a few different pairs on and see how you feel. The fact you can still buy skinny doesn’t mean they are current. You can buy multiple things in shops that are far from current.

im taller, but a size 8-10, I have long legs short body, wide leg are often too wide on me in some brands, but work in others, I’ve stopped wearing my skinnies completely as they do look very dated, I have kept them though.

the trick is they need to fit you round the hips, and backside, then gently widen, but not be so wide they swamp you, and be the right length, for me that’s just landing on the top of my footwear. They are hugely flattering on.

but if you just buy a random pair, the odds are it’s not going to work. My best ones are from Reiss, they are classed as flare, and I have in the dark indigo, they look very current on and hugely flattering.

Fitted jeans look nice with ballet flats or plain coloured trainers. I've bought some moschino mary jane flats that i'll be wearing with fitted jeans in Spring.
My current trainers that I wear with fitted jeans are plain black nike method of make (not everyone's bag, but I only ever buy black trainers. The method of make at least have a wee bit of gold bling 🤷‍♀️😂).

Don't worry @RillHunner I'm still wearing bootleg jeans 😂

My teenage DD was saying last evening that bootcut are coming back in fashion 🤷‍♀️
