Help me find a skirt for my elderly DM please!

My 86 yr old DM is 4'11" on a good day and a size 14. She has asked for a 'going out' skirt for Xmas. It would need to be 27ins long (she likes them long), most likely black or burgundy, velour, or pleated, and preferably an elasticated waist. I just can't find anything to suit.

I'd welcome any help! Please.

Popsy do free alterations so you could specify an exact length from the waistband.

Such a shame you don’t give any guidance on budget, @measureofmydreams.

And so depressing that the first suggestion, every single time any age over 65 is mentioned, is always the same brand.

At least they've suggested something 🤷🏻‍♀️

Roman do pettite the delivery is good, and various styles she might like, alternatively have you tried Markies.

Do you have a suggestion?

My Mum used to like Roman when she got into her 80's

Im struggling with the link but M&S have got a very attractive Ghost below-knee velvet skirt with lace in black or purple with elasticated waist for £59. It’s too long - I would get a tailor to shorten it.

I wonder if in general
she should get to know a dressmaker.

measureofmydreams · 09/12/2025 20:45

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, sorry I should have mentioned a budget, up to £70. I did look at Roman, M&S, Damart and Bonmarche previously but sizes were out of stock.

DMs dressmaker who she had for years used to do home visits, and has retired. So we'll search out another. I think we'll just have to buy a longer one and shorten it. I'll take a look at the links and advice you've shared.

Thank you, I've ordered two skirts from bon marche (flippy velour in black and navy) and the burgundy velour from finery, hoping that if all (or any) of them are ok DM will be happy. And then I can get them pinned up and shortened at a dry cleaners.

An update on the skirt search. DM didn't like the Bon Marche skirts as they weren't very well made. But the burgundy velour Finery skirt is lovely and she'll be keeping it. It will need shortening, but is v flattering on her. Thank you everyone for your help!
