Waterproof trainers for wearing outside all day

Merula · 26/11/2025 14:20

Hi, I've just got a new job, which will involve teaching children in an outside setting. I need something to wear on my feet that are comfortable but are also waterproof and able to cope with the weather through the seasons. I don't want them to be too hot in the summer, and not too heavy, but I also don't want cold, wet feet in the winter! Does anyone have any recommendations of waterproof trainers or something else suitable?

Thanks in advance!

@DandyPinkSwan , the almond/clay ones are my favourite colourway.

Ecco Biom 2.1X Mountain....£123 (reduced from £190).

Lightweight ankle high boots. Uppers of Goretex fabric, waterproof, but breathable....your feet won't sweat. First time on, wore them without socks, for a 4 mile walk, they are that comfortable.

Adidas Stan Smith. I’m on about my 20th pair and my feet are always the driest when we go out.

I teach children outside for large stretches of time too! I wear Blundstones- lightweight, 100% waterproof and mine are thermal lined. Toastie on cold days but only too warm for about 2 weeks of the summer holiday so didn’t affect me work-wise.

That's because they are plastic.

Merrell goretex trainers.

Spray anything you buy with Fabsil waterproofing spray (I use the normal stuff from Screwfix about £7 for 400ml or you can get the higher silicone Gold version from Amazon for about £6 for 200ml).

It can be used periodically to improve waterproofing on the shoes. I wear lightweight hiking shoes, Regatta Holcombe ones. I have used the spray on everything from the kids school shoes, coats and bags to horse rugs.

Leather upper, rubber sole afaik.

There seem to be different ones. Some are vegan.

Thanks very much everyone. I'm still looking through the recommendations. I realise, despite saying I'm not too fussed what they look like, that I am being rather fussy about appearance 😄So far, Salomon trainers are my favoured option.

you need to look at goretex trainers as recommended

it’s like buying walking boots, find a brand that fits your foot well. whatever you choose, consider giving an extra waterproof spray.

Salomon for example are fairly narrow and run very small. Merrells are wider,
ive had North Face hedgehogs last a good 2 -3 yyears

I knew you would be. Smile We all want shoes we like, don't we. Sensible doesn't need to be stuffy.
Some of the trainers look too much like trainers. Some of the gore-tex look too '1980s Dad's sensible shoes'.

I like these with the red bits:

Thanks. Yes, the Salomons I am looking at are Gore-tex. I do have narrow feet, but will try a few pairs on.

I wear Merrell hiking trainers for this sort of thing. They aren't very pretty but they are waterproof and comfy and those were my requirements. They also have good grip which is a priority for me.

Me too.
you see a lot of them around - I have two or three pairs in different states of wear and muddiness.

fruitbrewhaha · 27/11/2025 13:26

I’ve got vans walking boots. They are waterproof and very warm. They are lightweight like a trainer. I wear them like I’d wear a boot rather than for walking or hiking. Plus they look cool and I can pretend I can skateboard.

Silverbirchleaf · 27/11/2025 13:29

Go to somewhere like ‘Go Outdoors’ , Mountain Warehouse’ etc and get a waterproof shoe. The waterproof shoes will have an inner ‘sock’ which will keep you dry. Showerproof shoes aren’t as waterproof.

A trial shoe may be lighter than a walking shoe.,

BeenChangedForGood · 27/11/2025 13:35

I have these and they are fab. Not the prettiest but they’re relatively neutral which makes them easy to wear with loads of things. They’re very lightweight and supportive and properly waterproof ☺️

The Salomon gortex trainers are fantastic. I buy a pair a year and wear them pretty much every day. I then take my old pair and wear them for mucking out my horses in the summer. I have probably bought about 5-6 pairs and they don't disappoint.

Springisintheairohyeah · 27/11/2025 16:03

Not trainers so may not meet your criteria, but I can highly recommend the original ankle length muck boots. Warm, light, smart, super comfy to wear. I am on my feet outdoors a lot and tend to wear these the majority of the time. The only time they aren't really suitable is on the hottest of days or if you're traipsing through snow Muck Boots Muck Originals Ankle Boots Brown Plaid Print

I have some great waterproof trainers from Skechers - they are nice and lightweight and comfortable, and have stood up to morning dog walking in very wet grass

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 27/11/2025 17:42

I also have waterproof Skechers and spray occasionally with the waterproofing spray.

I have these two. They are so lightweight and comfortable they are my favourite thing to wear on my feet. Mine are blue and looks okay with jeans or casual trousers.

PeonyBulb · 27/11/2025 23:21

I had this issue recently

I ended up buying some New Balance I liked which I wear loads to walk distances and I had them waterproofed in Schuh’s special box where they spray shoes all over with Crep when in bought them.

i also bought some Sorrel explorer Joan boots online which are waterproof and incredibly comfortable but I would definitely size up even if it’s just by .5 half a size.

I have hiking boots too but not to wear on pavements but if you’re on earth and mud a lot then I’d get a trainer / hiking hybrid boot
