Teeth Whitening Trays from Dentist- about to try- advice.

Too late to turn back but my dentist mentioned I MAY have to wear them at night to get the best effect - my teeth are quite dark naturally. I wish I'd asked her a bit more at the time.

I've had my teeth scans and the trays will be ready soon.

I've had them before years ago (different dentist) but my teeth have moved so need new ones. Those previous ones were worn during the day for a couple of hours. That was ok but I couldn't drink or say much!

I'm not too chuffed about having to wear them overnight simply because I'm worried the gel may leak and I'd swallow it.

Can anyone reassure me? Is daytime an option or do I have to wear them overnight?

I'm just in the middle of getting mine done! Dentist did say overnight ( well, 6 hours overnight) was best but said if not then at least 2 hours and I've been doing about 3 hours or so.

I am going to give the overnight a go next week though worth noting that my dentist didn't do overnight as he said it made his teeth too sensitive.

I always wear mine overnight. You are not going to be poisoned by a bit of fluid. Othwise it wouldn't be a substance they put in dental trays.
You get the best results in the shortest time this way.

I appreciate I'd not be poisoned but it is corrosive bleach. The instructions say very specifically not to get the gel on your gums or injest it. The last time I used trays it was hard to get just the right amount in the trays (easy to under or over fill) and when they were slightly overfilled I did have to swab the extra bit off- not easy if you're asleep.

I did the overnight ones. The trays are fitted very tight so I never tasted it or thought I was swallowing it

I find overnight I ended up gagging on the liquid and getting severe sensitivity. Hygienist says it's fine to do in the evening for a few hours instead.

I always did mine overnight. Makes me drool a bit when I first put them in but then it's fine. During the days a pain in the arse, I can't last that long without a decent drink.

If they get sensitive then put sensodyn in the trays and chuck them on for 25 mins.

Titasaducksarse · 15/11/2025 18:16

Overnight 100%. The gel is thick and you shouldn't over fill the tray so there's no chance of it escaping. If they fit properly you won't notice they're in.
Yes you get sensitivity but use sensodyne. I get the result I want in 3 to 4 nights which is far preferable than having to do it for longer each evening.

Thanks all.

When I did it a few years ago I did 2 hours a day for 2 weeks. That suited me fine as I WFH and can easily not talk, eat or drink for 2 hours.

These new trays will be far superior to what I had donkey's years ago.

I snore loudly, Im pretty sure I snorted most of it up my nose.

I did the Enlighten system. Wearing the trays overnight was not a problem.
