It is a family occasion coming up in a few weeks and we are going to a posh restaurant and then back to the family member’s house for toasts. I have no idea what I should wear, let alone my teenage daughter! I do however know that she needs to not wear her usual joggers and skimpy top or the tiny slips of dresses that she wears for a teenage party. Any ideas?

God this is my nightmare - even yesterday dd1 and dh had a discussion about the definition of a school skirt and whether length was an artificial construct of oppression.. You also don’t want to spend loads do you as they may very well not wear it again.

My dd has a long black satin skirt she wore for a school presentation evening in the summer where they had to look ‘smart’. A long line of teen girls with long bouncy hair, black satin skirts and various cropped but not indecent tops - they looked lovely to be fair but it made me laugh that it was all the same outfit. Would something like that work? You could manage the top so it’s appropriate

We had the same the other week and I let her go in some wide legged jeans and a black fitted T-shirt, she was comfortable in it and it didn’t show off all the flesh!

Maybe take her to urban outfitters and choose something together? My DD is slightly younger but she does have some lovely outfits that are kind of boho - long skirts and smocking type tops that can look smart if you squint a bit and ignore the DMs. She also raided my wardrobe for a funeral and found a black and white lace dress which looked suitable with tights.

M&S has a lovely fluffy jumper in different colours which my daughter has, would look lovely with the satin skirt mentioned above

Thanks everyone, I like the sound of the satin skirt and fluffy jumper.
