Why do I do this ?

I've recently bought 2 new pairs of shoes and have some new clothes as well , so why am I not wearing them and still putting on my old and tatty stuff ?
It's not about saving for best , I don't do that .
But I keep wearing the old and never choosing the new .

I used to do this too! Now I have a rule that if I don't wear it within a week I return it or relist it on vinted - except for occasion wear. It means I usually wear things in the first few days now, and once clothes are in circulation I feel more at ease in them and can work out what goes with what.

I plan about 7 outfits that include any new items and have them hanging in the center of my wardrobe so they become my go to clothes. Then after about three weeks I create some more outfits and do it again.

If I buy something new and I'm not sure i'll wear it make sure I put it on and wear it the next day! Gets rid of that whole stress about saving things for best....and if I end up wearing a posh frock to Sainsbury's then I'm fine with it!

I love this idea! I'm def going to do this next time I buy something new.

@FastTurtle that’s a great idea, might try that!
I think part of the problem for me is that I WFH so it seems silly to wear my new things just to be in the house on my own, but that’s my life so I need to just wear them (or not buy new things!).

Or absolutely wear them on the weekend. I love the returning them if they haven’t been worn in a week thing though, that makes total sense.

This is really interesting!

I adore clothes, always have & i take great interst in dressing well.

I operate a sort of rotation system. I have a work wardrobe which i try to keep seperate from my non-work life. Not alwaya successfully.

My main gravitation is towards the dressier, nicer, going out stuff. I seem to have an aversion towards casual weekend wear & had a v tiny amout of clothes for that so i have forced myself to buy new jeans & a lovely swearshirt & wide leg jersey joggers from COS. I've yet to wear the sweatshirt...

I love keeping new things for trips away / dinners out etc

I recently sold a load of things on vinted & made £500 !!

I'm a minimalist shopper, so when I do buy something I'm usually excited to wear it for the first time.

When I decide to keep something I leave the tags on. If I haven't worn it after a couple of weeks it goes back, on the grounds that (a) I don't really need it or (b) I obviously don't feel sure about it. If it was an end of season sale purchase and the weather hasn't been conducive to wearing it, I'll try it on again before the return cut-off, just so I ask myself if it's really what I want/need for next summer or winter.

This thread has given me a bit of a push and I've worn another new outfit today, including a coat that had been in my wardrobe with the tags on for the best part of a year 😳

ozarina · 15/11/2025 17:04

I've had a little rearrange of my wardrobe. Instead of hanging by colour and type I've hung the new stuff as an outfit. It's a bit irritating to my eye but going to try this.

I’m very much like this as well

I did wear a new top to work this week and now am wearing a Cardi I bought recently

definitely stems from childhood and my mother saying are you saving it for best

i don’t really go out much to dress up and am mainly in casual wear
