Shampoo for oily hair

DumpedByText · 08/11/2025 00:29

I've got shoulder length, very smooth, shiny dark brown hair. It's so oily, I wash it ever other day but have to use dry shampoo on day two as it literally looks wet if I don't.

I need a decent shampoo for greasy hair, I'm using Elvive at the moment.

Any suggestions please.

Head and shoulders or Vosene - there must be something about the anti dandruff formula that works for oily hair

poppyrock · 08/11/2025 07:30

Yes, vosene is brilliant for greasy hair! I had to stop using it as started getting my hair highlighted again and it strips the colour faster, but it’s the best I ever found for stopping me from having to wash my hair every single day.

I have been struggling with hair that gets greasy quickly over the past few years.

I have found that double shampooing helps and also lowering the temperature at which you wash your hair at helps hugely. I love a boiling hot shower and didn’t realise that but washing my hair at that temp it was so damaging to my scalp and making it produce more oil.

Rayna37 · 08/11/2025 07:57

Definitely make sure you double shampoo it (lather rinse repeat) it makes such a difference for oily hair

Normally I would recommend the Elvive clay shampoo (in turquoise blue bottle) but they discontinued it. More fool them. It was the best oily shampoo around.

I also liked their Dream length one (orange bottle), but since they reformulated (and ruined) the coloured shampoo (red bottle), I haven’t touched it.

I like wella pure

I have the same problem and use Head & Shoulders. I'm not convinced any shampoo makes much of a difference.

Try a solid shampoo bar. I had similar hair and I now only wash all my hair twice a week, I do shampoo my heavy fringe most days. I used a very cheap liquid shampoo and managed to get to EOD but moved to bar and haven't looked back. Currently using Give me Strength from Kinkind but have used Lush in the past and Soho Soaps. Bars last me about 10-12 weeks.

I agree. Been plagued with oily hair since my early teens and am in my forties now! I’ve have used literally hundreds of different kinds and none allow me to get away with washing any less than once a day. Using cool rather than hot water does help a little. Lately (possibly due to perimenopause?) it’s gotten so bad even the teeniest amount of conditioner means my hair is oily hours after being washed. And I need a little conditioner or else my hair is full of static!

I was just at the hairdresser this morning and she recommended the Aveeno (not sure how it’s spelled) clarifying one.

My daughter has issues and we use the body shop tea tree shampoo and conditioner and they have a scrub you can use occasionally too. She won’t double wash but I believe that does help.

we did try and tea tree and mint on from somewhere as well which worked but she found the smell too strong. It comes out if she’s full of cold!!

When I was a kid I remember my mum washing my hair in vinegar as it was so greasy.

Also with conditioner, make sure you don’t put it on your roots. Just on the length. That makes a difference for us as well.

Bed Head detox clarifying shampoo. It’s been life changing for me

ClaraSais · 08/11/2025 17:19

I feel your pain! I’ve always had oily hair to the point where I asked the doctor if there was anything I could do for it! Lush shampoo bar is good. I avoid anything like Herbal Essences too heavy for me! My hair is always oily on day 2 and it’s worse with a fringe! I use Batiste dry shampoo and also handybands from Seasalt which are brilliant.

preg123 · 08/11/2025 20:27

As a life long greasy hair sufferer (also dark brown) I’ve found that accepting it and just washing it everyday is the solution - maybe not ideal, but I look and feel better, plus no more time consuming than trying to make my hair look okay with dry shampoo and the like.

strawberryhearts2 · 08/11/2025 22:08

I have had greasy hair since I was a teen and I am 50 now. I just wash my hair every day, as cannot leave it any longer. I have long hair and it is in really good condition, so I have no concerns that I wash my hair too frequently and causing damage. I use Herbal Essences orange scent shampoo and conditioner. It is time consuming though and wish I did not have to wash and dry it every morning.

Cakepop101 · 08/11/2025 22:27

I have found the coconut shampoo bar from savers to be great! I only wash twice a week now. And it’s only £1!

PettyMare · 09/11/2025 15:36

Cheap poundshop apple shampoo. Lather twice, and tiniest amount of conditioner only on the very ends. No conditioner anywhere near the roots.

coxesorangepippin · 09/11/2025 16:18

Johnson's baby shampoo is great for oily hair
