Looking for a quality winter coat for a curvier woman..

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a Parka style, quality, winter coat for my sisters birthday next week. She is a bigger, curvier woman and wears a size 18. She also prefers a looser fit since she will be wearing layers underneath and doesn't really want to size up.

I know she has bought coats from Evans and H&M in the past, but she said the quality was not great and the coat faded after a couple of washes. I am willing to spend more money if the quality is great and the coat will last a long time.

Seasalt go up to a size 24 at least, and many of their coats are fully waterproof.

Also, better to size up than be uncomfortable!

I have a seasalt Janelle coat, bought it in an m&s sale and it's very good, warm, waterproof, quite flattering harts of stur have the green one in the sale at the moment. (They're a department store I've bought lots of things from them)

They're as good as most I'd say, quality wise.

Fair enough. Find one somewhere else then!

Mountain Warehouse go up to a 24. I have had my last two winter coats for dog walking from them.

Yep, that's why I am asking for recommendations!

Seasalt coats are very good quality and last well, no fading after washing or anything like that. If you don't like the style of them, could you give some indication of the kind of thing you think she might like? Coats from places like Evans and H&M will be fashion items rather than a quality long lasting winter coat.

I have this one from Mountain Warehouse and can confirm that it is both waterproof and warm.

Your sister is being silly about not wanting to size up. She just needs to wear the correct size to accommodate her and her clothes.

So you recommend going a size up - getting size 20?

I don't like the coat at all!

I think you forgot the bit about thanking me for the suggestion? Lol.

I think Parka style.

Puffer jackets I don't think she is a fan of since it is more suited to slim women.

I couldn't say. What you could do is get a size 18 and get a gift receipt so that she could exchange it for a size 20 if she needs it. The other option is to take her shopping with you.

mazedasamarchhare · 02/11/2025 22:46

Landsend. I love mine. And sizes are slightly on the generous side, so an 18 will allow for layers underneath. The only thing I didn’t like initially were the sleeves which are a little on the shorter side, but I find it useful now, especially if holding at umbrella, driving or walking the hound.

I just looked on the website and they don't have many winter coats tbh. What coat did you buy?
