What shoes to make this dress casual.

Hello!

I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, that’s ok, but I love this dress.

I bought some black heels to dress it up. I have them on in the photo, but that is really going to limit where I can wear this.

I’d like to dress it down too. I was thinking;

• white flat trainers (not running ones)
• knee high black boots
• ankle high black boots
• other

In an ideal world I’d try on items with the dress, but I don’t want to wear it shopping without appropriate shoes and quite frankly, I can’t afford the time or money to buy everything to try and then return.

Hoping for some stylish Mumsnetters to point me in the right direction. I want to look smart but a bit more casual.

Ok. I’ve never worn Dr Marten before. Are they quite heavy?

I'd have said black knee high boots but tbh I think it's just a dressy dress and is never going to look particularly casual!

Pick up the brown with some flat brown knee boots (tall enough to hide under the hemline all the way round; might be tricky with the asymmetric appearance of the hem so over the knee might work better).

Brown suede trainers are everywhere at the moment and could work if you really lean into the look. I’d wear a brown casual jacket in the same tone to make the trainers look conscious.

Phase Eight website show it with black knee high boots. I personally would go for a block heel to dress it down a bit

I didn’t think of brown, but actually the model on the website was wearing black knee high boots and there was something too heavy about the look. Brown might lighten that up!
I see what you mean by ankle boots against the hemline and it’s something I was worried about. And I love the idea of brown trainers too.

Yes, I did look. I didn’t see the dress on the website initially, but spotted it in the shop and tried it on. When I looked to see what it was advertised with, it felt too heavy. I accept it goes, but it looks a bit clunky iyswim. I think the pp posters idea of going brown might lighten it up.

Definitely. I think brown is the way forward. I think that will definitely tone it down for casual wear. Maybe a cropped brown denim jacket type of thing?

It is a difficult one to style (for me at least). And I don’t have a lot of shoes at home right now as I live in trainers and Birkenstocks. But I’ve had a bit of a Mounjaro makeover and want desperately to treat myself to a new look. I envision feminine, but smart, pretty but strong.

I think I’m going to order some trainers and boots in brown and go from there.
