How to look cool when you're fat?! Party outfit help please!

AnotherEmma · 22/10/2025 23:02

I'm about to turn 40 and embracing it by throwing a party in a cocktail bar. I want a cool outfit but the problem is that I'm fat. I've been losing weight but slowly and am still a size 16 (in dresses and tops) or 18 (trousers).

I would love to wear a statement outfit, maybe a jumpsuit or a bold trouser, but the things I'm drawn to - that look great on slim models - would just look awful on me. I don't want to play it safe either and just look boring and frumpy. Help!

(I have huge boobs so can't wear high neck tops or dresses - need a v neckline preferably. I'd like jewel or metallic colours.)

Mint Velvet do great jumpsuits in ypur size. Some are frumpy but not all. Wear with great shoes and bag. Enjoy!

I don't really have a budget as I can spend what I want but don't want to go too high-end given that I'm trying to lose weight and might not wear it again.

What are your best features, OP? Try to accentuate them.

A pair of tailored trousers with a pair of stilettos could look fabulous, and slimming too. You could pair with a silk low cut top and fitted blazer jacket. Statement earrings and smokey eyeshadow.

I agree with this and Sainsbury's have some great sequined trousers atm in lovely burgundy and deeper green colours. Plenty in your size. They look nicer than they sound and are v glam!

Look at Issey Miyake Pleats Please, the size 4. Some great pieces including jumpsuits and very cool.

Thank you all for the suggestions and encouragement! Sorry not to reply until now. I have ordered a few things online and went shopping today. I got these silver wide leg trousers which I'm really pleased with, and they're a starting point for an outfit. I'll wear them with heels and I'm looking for a top, I want ruby red satin but I'll see what I find. I love the velvet blazer suggestion (I'd been eyeing up velvet suits!) and might add one, depending on the top I find.

I'm quite tall and in proportion, and there is an hourglass figure under there Grin
I definitely look slimmer in outfits that are fitted around the waist. I dislike my gigantic boobs as I find they make me look matronly but I suppose they are arguably a feature... I wear good bras and choose necklines carefully.

Love your outfit suggestion! Apart from stilettos (can't walk in them to save my life) but I can do a chunkier heel! Everything else you describe is very doable.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought to look in Sainsbury's! I'll see if I can go at some point.

They are indeed very cool but far more than I want to spend on an outfit which I am very much hoping will be too big for me in 6 months or so!

50s style tea dress?

https://www.hellbunny.com/collections/default-category-dresses-style-50s-dresses

The shape really suits those who are curvy and bigger of nork.

Thank you - I do love 50s flare dresses and I agree they are super flattering. Just not the look I'm going for this time. I have worn dresses like that before, though, and felt fab in them!

Do you know Fairlie Curved, @AnotherEmma? The owner designs for women with fuller busts - might be worth a look? You’re absolutely right it’s worth defining your waist, and fuller trousers will help balance you out. You have the height so I’m sure you can look great!

Ive got big boobs too (38GG) & am a size 16-18 currently so its a challenge.. I actually have just found 2 lovely ‘going out’ tops on eBay from private sellers. (Vinted is obviously good too).
One is a Monsoon Black v neck long sleeved top with gold sparkle which is a good quality thick material & skims my shape, the other is a Next v neck white & gold paisley pattern blouse without buttons.
I definitely recommend v neck & low cut round neck tops in a good quality material with a good uplifting bra!
I find now I’m 49 I have to be careful what I buy… I bought a pink satin patterned shirt from River Island that looked great on the model - it made me look super mumsy. Not good for a night out.
I like the sound of your trousers OP, with heels, a blazer & a sexy top, some jewellery & a bag you will look great.

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 24/10/2025 21:14

I dislike jumpsuits across the board in any shape or size (except maybe for cute toddlers or gardening grandmas) but I don’t think anyone can go wrong with a nice A line midi dress.

I’m about your size and of all the models of clothes I’ve worn, A line dresses always get the most compliments. Wrap dresses too, but I never feel particularly hot in them.

Sorry but that shape is all wrong for me. I don't wear anything shorter than knee-length because of my huge thighs! I know it is possible to be curvy on the top half and still have great legs, but alas not me...
