Can this dress be styled so it doesn’t look like a dressing gown?

It’s not actually this dress, but a very similar one from Landsend that I got on Vinted. I like it but husband says it looks like a dressing gown! Can I style it out or should it go back on Vinted?

Boots and a belt and it'll look great

youmustbeshittingme · 22/10/2025 06:29

It’s a denim shirt dress and not remotely dressing gown like.
I’d wear it with tights and ankle boots or maybe no tights and trainers if it’s not cold.

WearyCat · 22/10/2025 06:45

Thank you! That’s what I was hoping. H is usually positive about my clothes so I was a bit shocked.

could I wear it over jeans? Black or leopard ones?

No. You can’t wear it over jeans - sorry!

Knee high boots will make it look great. I wouldn’t add a belt as that wouldn’t work with the side ties.

It’s not a dressing gown!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/10/2025 06:58

Nothing dressing gown like about a denim shirt dress. Jewellery, boots, good to go. Wearing it over jeans would just look odd!

Rocknrollstar · 22/10/2025 06:58

My DH rarely does f ever says anything about my clothes but if he made that comment I would put it back on Vinted

TattooStan · 22/10/2025 06:58

He's just being a clueless man! Who wears a denim dressing gown!

It looks really shapeless to me, so I'd go with the belt idea suggested by other posters.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 22/10/2025 06:59

A belt would be lumpy over the waist ties and add bulk. Pull the waist ties to cinch the waist and fasten one button less than the model has to create a v shape which will emphasise your waist.

DBD1975 · 22/10/2025 07:00

Put it back on Vinted.
Doesn't matter how much you love it or how you style it every time you put it on you will have your husband's voice in your head telling you it looks like a dressing gown.
No way back I'm afraid (in my opinion).

No you can’t wear it over jeans. That will make it look more dressing gown like!! I’d just wear it with white trainers when it’s warm enough or ankle boots, with or without tights

I'd just ignore him and think he has no idea what he is talking about.

As for "styling it", it"s a denim dress - put it on and wear it with flat shoes with ankle socks, or opaque tights or flat lace up boots and opaque tights or flat knee boots.

Epidote · 22/10/2025 09:03

It looks a bit like a dressing gown. Big belt and boots will do the trick in my opinion.
I like the dress BTW.

WonderingWoo · 22/10/2025 09:34

Well that's a dumb comment, it's clearly a dress.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 22/10/2025 09:40

It doesn't look anything like a dressing gown.

Don"t add a belt. It will look fussy and overstyled.

continuo · 22/10/2025 09:49

Agree. It's a denim dress. Nothing dressing gown about it.

I'm not sure why you would think about wearing it with jeans though? The right boot would work. Although I love a heavy, shorter boot, I think knee-length would work better with this. Shoe-wise, maybe a chunky brown loafer. The black shoes on the model don't look quite right to me, but they're in the right direction.

continuo · 22/10/2025 09:49

And absolutely, no belt!

UpMyself · 22/10/2025 10:05

You could, but it won't look good.

I have a shirt dress, and I wear it with opaque tights, chelse boots and a bright scarf around the neck.

If the dress looks like a dressing gown, chances are the fit isn't right for you. Put it back on Vinted.
