Black dress and navy graduation gown… is this a no no? Help!

I have my graduation next week and didn’t realise the gowns are navy not black. The dress I was planning to wear is black. Will this look bad on the day? I want nice photos to keep and want to look my best. Please help.

I’m already feeling very self conscious about the event and have also gained a lot of weight and can think of nothing worse than walking across a stage in front of an audience, but I also know I’ve worked hard for this and want to at least have a nice photo to show for the occasion.

I love black with navy. I may be deluded but to me it epitomises French chic. I often wear a navy dress with black tights and shoes. Or team a navy coat with black gloves and boots.

Why would it not be okay? Because of some stupid made up don't wear navy and black together rule?

It’s fine.

Just don’t wear a skirt that doesn’t cover your bum or a dress your boobs are falling out of (both things I couldn’t avoid noticing at my graduation - I couldn’t tell you the colour of the clothes in question or whether they clashed with the navy robes! Lots of people were wearing black, though.)

It’s fine. DS and many of his cohort wore navy suits under their black robes and they all looked fantastic. Enjoy your day and your moment crossing the stage!

That will look nice and sophisticated. I sit on the stage at graduations. The men tend to wear suits or at least a shirt and tie. Many of the women are appropriately dressed (I’d call it smart business wear) but some of them look like they’re out on the pull and it detracts from the gowns.

Thanks so much everyone. I’m not sure this would fall under smart business wear. I’d it appropriate?

Looks lovely and completely appropriate.

Looks lovley. Black and navy coupled were central to Dior’s “new look”‘collection. Very chic.
