Trousers..but with a soft stetchy waist

I'm hoping that you can help me find some nice trousers - mainly for work but that could also be worn on smart/casual nights out

I have a slipped/bulging disc in my lower back and all my trousers/jeans seem to just sit in the wrong place putting pressure on my back and waist.

I also have ulcerative colitis which can cause severe bloating around my middle so they need to be stretchy too. Sizing up doesn't really seem to work and I have the same issues with tights so dresses are not really the answer.

I mostly work from home so can wear leggings/pj bottoms which are great... but I have to go in to the office approx once a week so need to find something a little smarter to see me through the winter/festive season.

Im 5"3" and a size 14/16 apple shape. Not fussed on style ... as comfort is key. Ideally not super expensive as I'd like to get a few pairs. I mostly wear flats / boots due to the back problems.

Thank you in advance.

The M&S jersey wide leg trousers sound just the ticket.

I second these but don't tumble dry them!!!

SpotTheCat · 12/10/2025 19:03

I have these and find them really comfy. I think they’ll be too thin for when it gets really cold though.

I second these but don't tumble dry them!!!

I had an early pair in regular length that I tumbledried. The length shrank to short

So I bought another pair in long and tumbledried those, hoping the same thing would happen and long would shrink to regular length and it hasn't!!!!! So now my trousers are too long.

A cautionary tale although I'm not sure what I'm cautioning against.

I’ve got the M&S ankle grazers and find them a great smart trouser

I second these but don't tumble dry them!!!

i’ve got the boot-cut version of these and totally agree about not tumble drying, and I wash them at 20 degrees. They’re lovely but heaven knows what makes them shrink

Devilsmommy · 12/10/2025 19:08

Next do a lot of trousers with the elasticated waist. They look really smart and aren't mega pricey

Tidypidy · 12/10/2025 19:09

Tu in Sainsbury’s have some new in trousers with elasticated waists. Some styles come in different lengths too.

ironyisnotlost24 · 12/10/2025 19:16

The M&S ones are fabulous. My go-to pair.

Lifejigsaw · 12/10/2025 19:17

Pleated palazzo trousers. I have some from Zara I wear for work / travelling/ going out and get complimented every single time!

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 12/10/2025 19:20

Thanks all... the m&s ones look like what i usually wear in bootcut ... but there seem to be lots of styles and fits so maybe I need to find a big store and go and try a few on.

Hadn't thought of Tu but I do like a lot of their stuff so that's a good shout too.

Like the new look ones ... wouldn't normally shop there so thanks for the suggestion

Our.local next didn't seem to have anything.. so again maybe I will need to have a look online or in a bigger branch.

These are fab, so soft and comfy and in so many colours!

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 13/10/2025 13:12

Thanks all.... lots of great reccommendations. Going to try the Stradivaruis ones which look ideal. Searching for palazzo pants has given me a few more ideas too.

Magic trousers. Google it. But don’t buy the cheapo ones.

I have some of these, they're great. I have Crohn's, so I understand the bloating. As a previous poster said, don't tumble dry them, they're made of viscose and will shrink.

MrsMattSantos · 13/10/2025 16:57

I’ve got a pair of wide leg leggings from Snag which I’ve been really impressed with. Nothing like traditional leggings, they’re really nice thick material, stretchy waist and come in lots of sizes

ItsJustASimpleLine · 13/10/2025 17:38

Tru Bonmarche. They're all stretchy but have a lovely workweek section and their jeans are so soft with a stretchy waist its like wearing joggers. Good luck.

HelenaWaiting · 14/10/2025 22:18

Saint and Sofia. There are loads to choose from, in a very wide range of sizes. A little pricey but their stuff lasts forever.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2025 22:29

I got some really nice ones from Uniqlo

Scallywag2023 · 14/10/2025 22:42

These are like wearing comfy leggings but look smart - wear them all the time from Next - Black Smoothing Ponte Jersey Wide Leg Trousers
