I've bought a gorgeous top, but I don't know if I will wear it.

I bought this top from a charity shop last week. It's gorgeous and the photo doesn't do it justice. It's not metallic, it's a bit glittery with shades of silver and bronze. I thought I would wear it for Christmas parties or perhaps a posh dinner, but tbh I don't go to many of these! And Christmas time it'll be too cold to wear short sleeves. I don't want to take it back, it's so pretty, but I don't know if I will actually wear it and maybe I should just take it back so someone who will actually get some wear out if it can buy it.
Wwyd?

If you enjoy looking at it and have the storage space, keep it. Admire it and play dress up occasionally until you’re sure you don’t want it any more. It doesn’t matter whether you wear it or not - its an object like any other that you are allowed to enjoy in whatever way pleases you.

I have a collection of clothes that I enjoy immensely, some of them are 20 years old and have never been worn. They’re like old friends.

If you were a philatelist would people be saying ‘you know you should use those stamps up before you get any more.. they’ve sat in that album for a year and you haven’t stuck them on any envelopes..you want to start sending some letters or give them to charity”.

No, of course they wouldn’t.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2025 01:10

I’d wear it for Xmas - layer up if you’re cold, but I always get hot if I’m cooking Xmas lunch and want a light top.

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 10/10/2025 01:26

I've had it a couple of weeks and it's a 30 day refund policy. I keep putting it in a bag with the receipts and then taking it out again. It was only £7! Maybe I should engineer a meet up with friends at an occasion I can wear it 😄

BusterGonad · 10/10/2025 01:39

Do you actually need the £7, is it a big spend for you? If not keep it, and if you don't wear it just donate it after Christmas or whenever you feel fed up of it.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 10/10/2025 01:48

It's lovely, I'd wear it as an everyday casual top balanced out with a pair of fairly scruffy jeans (relaxed wide leg, light or distressed denim) and sneakers.

If not too tight it would also go over a fine black turtleneck long sleeve top in the cooler months.

Ruthietuthie · 10/10/2025 02:11

You could wear it before Christmas, with a pair of black wide-leg pants (silky ones, maybe). It's lovely, it makes you happy, you should keep it and enjoy it.

coxesorangepippin · 10/10/2025 02:33

Just wear it out and about, no need for an occasion!

Geneticsbunny · 10/10/2025 07:58

You could definitely wear it with jeans for an evening out with friends and it will work in summer too or with a jacket in autumn or spring.

Britpopbaby · 10/10/2025 08:08

I think this would fit the jeans and nice top outfit formula. It would help dress jeans up a bit so I would keep it.

Perfidia · 10/10/2025 08:13

As @BankfieldForever says, you don’t have to wear it. If it brings you joy, ask for a dressmaker’s dummy for Christmas (they’re surprisingly expensive) and display the top in your dressing area, or on the turn of the stairs or wherever.

You could make it a project to find a suitable vintage skirt to complete the ensemble.

MorningFresh · 10/10/2025 08:39

You could wear it over a thin nude coloured thermal cami for warmth. It's pretty.

Charlenedickens · 10/10/2025 08:41

Is money really tight, as this is a lot of angst over 7 quid. If it is, take it back. If not, then you can wear that with jeans going to the local pub for dinner or whatever.

MerveilleduJour · 10/10/2025 09:06

If you can afford the 7 quid then keep it, provided you're reasonably confident you'll be able to engineer an opportunity to wear it. Would you be warm enough with short sleeves under some sort of jacket/cardigan/coatigan? Do you own (or could you justify buying) something suitable? I feel the cold, so I could probably commit to a long-sleeved thermal baselayer underneath, knowing I wouldn't get warm enough to need to take off my cardigan layer.

But I have no occasion to wear glittery tops and learned long ago that buying clothes I love, although they belong in a completely different lifestyle doesn't bring me joy, it just makes me annoyed at the wasted opportunity to spend the money on something I can wear. Not everyone feels the same way - I agree with the first poster that if you can enjoy it without wearing it there's no reason you shouldn't do so, it's just that that's not me.

FishwivesSalute · 10/10/2025 09:08

It won't be too cold to wear short sleeves indoors in warm environments at Christmas!

AnchorWHAT · 12/10/2025 10:23

Id wear it with a little black velvet cardigan, i have one that ties at the front with a chiffon bow that would go well with that.

childofthe607080s · 12/10/2025 10:24

Wear it for slightly less posh parties and dinners - become the person who wears that normally if you love it

Mauro711 · 12/10/2025 11:48

I think it would look great tucked in a black skirt. Like this, or whatever length skirt you prefer.

carpedaim · 12/10/2025 11:51

I really like it and agree with others you could dress it up or down, with smart trousers or blue or black jeans. I vote keep it!

YourAmplePlumPoster · 12/10/2025 11:54

You can wear it over a long sleeve black top.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 12/10/2025 13:01

I agree with the long sleeved black top suggestion. I'd go for the black version of this thermal top from Uniqlo. I have them in black, navy, natural and dark green and they are lovely and soft, surprisingly warm, easy to wash in the machine on 30 degrees and dry very quickly. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E469765-000

Dolallytats · 12/10/2025 13:06

I'd wear it with jeans or a longer skirt. It's really pretty. If you love it, keep it.

I'm still regretting not buying the beautiful choker necklace I nearly bought from a jewellers in Edinburgh 30 years ago!! I absolutely loved it, but wasn't sure I would wear it, so didn't buy it. Honestly, I would have looked at it and loved it every day!!

dudsville · 12/10/2025 13:10

Wear it today OP, even if you're not going outside at all, just spend the day wearing something that makes you really happy!

LooseCanyon · 12/10/2025 13:12

You could wear it on Xmas Day (or another time) with a black cardie, which you take off when you get too hot!
