Best wool socks to wear with DMs

What are the best wool socks to wear with DMs? I mean proper woollen socks (though probably with some synthetic mixed in). When I wear wool socks I can wear my DMs all day and walk and walk in them. Cotton socks, no matter how thick, and my DMs bite my heels after an hour or a mile.

i have some old M&S wool socks, they must be about 20y old, which just keep going. A bit bobbly, but otherwise still perfect. Luckily I have a few pairs of them, because every other pair of woollen socks I have bought since those has worn out.

My hiking socks are too thick. Though they aren’t wool. Are Smart wool hiking socks thinner?

I don't think anyone can tell you if woollen ones are thinner than yours! I have some hiking socks which are both the same grade and the wooden ones are thicker. I have winter hiking ones which are thicker than my normal ones and I have running socks which are thinner than the hiking socks.

Hiking shops have a range of socks in different thicknesses, you will be able to find something I expect. Smartwool are lovely socks IME.

I have several pairs of wool CHUP, they're the perfect thickness I think.

Merino wool socks from Costco. Not too thick, warm and cosy.

I'm not in the UK so the socks I wear probably aren't available there, but look for fine merino socks.

My DD wears the Doc socks from the DM shop. She swears by them, she also uses gel heel protectors that cover under her foot and all of her heel.

Gorgeous, like wearing a hug on my feet. But they wore out very quickly in ordinary shoes, not even DMs.

Bridge dale socks are very hard wearing and comfy.

I like Bridgedale socks. Comfy and hardwearing. Millets often have them on offer.

Doc Socks (as in official DM socks) are perfect (not cheap, but reinforced in all the right places)

Hiking socks come in different thicknesses depending upon what you want. Smart wool and bridgedale are both really good brands who have wool options and different weights.

If you are getting rubbed I would suggest trying twin skin socks or a thin pair of silk socks under your wool socks. If you just want padding and support hiking socks alone are fine. A double layer helps stop friction against your skin by allowing friction between the socks. Socks over tights works the same.

My Bridgedales are too thick for my boots, and not wool. I think it’s specifically wool that makes the difference. It doesn’t matter which cotton socks I wear, the DMs rub. I wore thin cotton socks over thin wool tights, and they did not rub.

Bridgedale do many different socks, in different fabrics. Just because the ones you have aren't suitable doesn't mean none will be. They are a really good sock manufacturer. If you go to a good climbing or hiking shop they will have some you can handle, or you can order a few and send back.
