Office dresses in winter and tights

Hi everyone, in my return to work age 53 I find fashions changed and tights are not the thing like they were back in 2010.

Please help me.

I am in a corporate environment where we still need to dress smart. No trainers (not that I own any I’m really not trendy). I can’t wear doc martins as it’s just not my thing. How can I wear say a green dress and keep my legs warm or do I need to stick to trousers and black dresses with black opaque tights. I’m a size 10. Outside of work I dress equestrian style as I have two horses.

I just need someone to help me get more trendy, but bear in mind my age. I was thinking of going to a personal stylist to get ideas, but any help you can offer would be great.

You don’t need to wear a black dress to wear black tights!

If you’re near a John Lewis with a personal shopper service, I can recommend trying that.

You can wear any dress with tights!

I still wear my summer dresses in winter with black opaque tights and a chunky cardie!
(also early 50s and nobody has told me I look like a twat so far!).

I'm not sure why you think tights are not the thing like they were in 2010. What has changed is that in summer it's now acceptable to have bare legs or ankle socks but as it gets colder women wear sheer tights and we're now moving into opaque tights.

Why do you think you can't wear black tights with a green dress? I have opaque tights in black, red, green, navy and various other blues, purple, maroon and patterened.

I do this. I’m mid 40s.
Wear the same dresses with M&S 250 denier velour lined tights (my holy grail! I buy about 10 pairs every couple of years and wear them through to toe holes) and chunky boots or smart trainers and chunky cardies. Don’t care if a look a twat tbh. I’m warm and comfy!!

Brilliant - I think it was just something in my head I had. Thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts. I really appreciate it.

Black tights are still a thing! The warmer the better.

suburburban · 05/10/2025 12:15

also I wear sheer tights under wide legged trousers in Winter

Black tights are worn with dresses in my office too. 40/60 denier through to the lined, thermal ones when it gets colder. Usually worn with ankle sock boots
