have a dress, bare legs or not? What shoes?

I have this for an event mid-October and can't decide between black sheers or bare legs and what shoes.

Thoughts? Advice?

Black tights suddenly look new this year! (To me at least.)

For a party I’d like something like these:

Simone Rocha trainers

For something more formal maybe a square toed block heeled patent loafer?

Comefromaway · 02/10/2025 13:58

I would freeze if I attempted bare legs in October.

hohummm1 · 02/10/2025 14:08

Thanks, both.

@CapaciousHag This is more formal, but I like that trainer suggestion for other times.

@Comefromaway Weirdly, I'm very rarely cold, and it will be house to taxi to event, so not much outdoor time!

These are the shoes they've shown with the dress in that photo. What do you think? Could they be worn with back sheers? Not a fan of an open toe with tights, but the opening here is tiny, so more pro forma than real open toe, and I like how unfussy they are

I don’t like the look of bare legs in colder weather. It just looks a bit wrong - unless it’s actually warm.

Newmeagain · 02/10/2025 14:11

I like the look of those shoes but how on earth will they stay on??? No strap on the back and shallow at the front - it defies the laws of physics…

WildCherryBlossom · 02/10/2025 14:17

Those shoes are great. They look comfortable too. I love a well designed wedge shoe. I’m not sure how they would work with tights though. Definitely need tights with a short dress for a formal do in October. Bare legs look under-dressed in colder months. You can actually get tights designed for open toed shoes with a thong between the toes, but I’ve never actually tried them.

Ok, I've ordered the shoes, so they should arrive early next week and I'll test them with tights.

@Newmeagain I'll let you know if they stay on! If not, they'll be going right back.

@WildCherryBlossom I don't know why, but I find those tights weird. It's obvious you have tights on, so bare toes aren't fooling anyone 😂

@Comefromaway I have some similar boots - I'll give them a try, but think it won't feel quite formal enough for this. Definitely something I'll keep in mind for another time.

I would recommend tights in October without a doubt. Your shoes look interesting .I hope you enjoy the event.

God people are awful wimps, it's mid October in the British Isles (presumably?), not January in Siberia. From a style point of view, if you've got the legs for it, I think bare with a gold platform sandal would look great/best, as hopefully will the shoes you've ordered. This is not everyday wear but a special occasion, a little bit of mild discomfort is hardly going to kill the OP.

Hah. I think you've given me the go-ahead I needed to slap a little tinted moisturiser on my legs and go bare, assuming temps don't take a sudden dip to subzero.
