Need a shoulder bag for cruise

I’m looking for a bag to take things in when going on excursions on shore, to carry a microfibre towel, sunglasses, hand gel, swim costume, that sort of stuff. I want something good, but will probably buy on vinted. Any suggestions? Been looking at la Pliage, but not sure I want leather …

I know you said you want something "good", but personally I would just use a simple waterproof drawstring swim backpack bag for the swim gear etc. and spend the money on a cute cross body bag for the valuables and wear both when going on day release excursions lol.

I've learned through my travels that expensive travel gear is chucked around, gets covered in sun cream and sand and is too precious to take anywhere dusty or where it might be damaged or even stolen. Just my opinion.

Good idea. What cross body bag would you recommend?

Who are you cruising with? Some cruise lines give you a shoulder bag in your cabin and lots of people use those with a cross body bag as well.

will you need towels and swimming costumes for excursions?

if it’s an urban excursion I’d use a small cross body bag. Depending on location I have an anti theft one I use which is big enough for phone, water, umbrella.

for the beach I have a large mesh bag off aliexpress for about £5. Big enough for everything but with an inside pocket and some outside compartments for keeping bits separate. Handles suitable for going over shoulder or carrying.

I just use a lovely small burgundy leather one I bought in Spain so I can't recommend anything really. I'm not into expensive bags at all, as long as they fit the purpose I need them for, that's fine by me. Sorry I can't help you there as the prices of some of them make my eyes water and would pay for my next trip lol 😊

But I'm sure others who know about and like nice bags (I do too but I won't spend the money on them!) will be along to give you some suggestions.

Hope you have a great trip. Where are you cruising to - if you feel like telling....

We’re travelling with P&O. I don’t think they provide bags.

Plenty of the swim backpacks on Amazon. Some nice cross body bags also, but probably more MY budget than yours! No harm to have a look and see what type you might like I suppose.

The Canaries and Madeira. First time for me!

Think I’ll just order a cheap swim bag online.

The ubiquitous Uniqlo bag?

The perfect cross body bag for travelling, totally agree! I have every colour available now and they fit so much stuff.... I don't care if they get marked as I usually throw them in the wash, and if that doesn't work out, I'll buy another since they are so inexpensive.

Which one?

The Mini Round Shoulder Bag. They're great!

I take a large canvas beach bag, plastic bags for snacks and wet cossie, and the ubiquitous Uniqlo bag for usual handbag stuff. It’s the cross body crescent-shaped one which holds loads.
Also take an insulated water bottle as P&O don’t do single-use plastics but do have water fountains onboard.
Lots of people take the waterproof phone holders too, for the beach.
Also, you can take the blue pool towels ashore and drop them in the laundry bins as you get back aboard. So I don’t bother with my own towel.

Mexicocalling · 27/09/2025 15:30

P&O def won’t provide any bags, sadly. I use a dock and bay packable beach bag, or a le pliage backpack for town based shore-days. On board I use the dock and bay for going to the lido deck and spa areas. I bought a le-pliage rattan basket bag this year and I adore it/used it daily all summer. It’s small, but has been perfect for my daily essentials, and I love it for when I’m on the ship and I only need to carry a few essentials.

I tried not taking a bag for sea days when I went on a cruise in Feb and ended up buying one on day 3 because I wanted something to keep my phone/roomcard/kindle etc in when moving around the ship!
