Does anyone have (or has tried on) this M&S skirt?

I really like the look of this skirt. It's not even normally the kind of thing I wear, but something about it is really calling to me.

There are no reviews yet and I don't live near an M&S so would have to order it (and maybe return). Thought I'd chance a post here and see if anyone has it or has seen it in store and has any thoughts?

Also, would it be mad to wear it with a navy top/jumper...?

Urgh, and now I've just realised it comes in three different lengths. I would have no idea whether the regular or tall would work for me.

That's lovely! I think it would look better with black, brown, cream or maybe yellow. Not navy.

Thank you for replying! Ok, fair on the no navy.

I could make black work. It would be the first brown item of clothing I've ever worn, so don't have anything else brown - except boots.

Yes I have it! I’m 5”1 and got petite and length looks the same on me as it does on the picture if that helps?

Ooh, yes that's helpful. So if you're 5'1" and the petite comes to your ankles-ish, then at 5'9", I'll probably need the tall if I want the same length. Or regular if I want it more midi-ish. Ok, that makes sense, thank you!

I would go with navy. It's a very chic, French colour combination. All over brown would work well too. A light coloured top would highlight the lighter colour and diminish the effect of the skirt.

Bigoldmoneypit · 27/09/2025 08:25

I have it. 5ft 9 got tall, sits like picture

User5306921 · 27/09/2025 11:20

I'd wear with navy too.
It looks really lovely.

What shoes/boots will you wear with it OP?

Nearlyhealthy · 27/09/2025 12:11

Ooh, I was eyeing that one too. Decided I really don’t need it in the end but absolutely support you buying it 😉

I also wouldn’t normally wear something like this but I do think it could look really nice. A navy wool jumper would go really nicely.

TheOtherBear · 27/09/2025 16:16

Thanks everyone! Ok. Definitely going to go for it. Will order a tall as it sounds like a regular won’t be long enough.

And interesting about the navy….it’s a colour I have gajillions of things in, as it’s my ‘neutral’, so have loads of things to try it with.

@User5306921- thinking my brown Chelsea boots. I think it might look better with longer/higher boots, but I just can’t seem to get on with them; I find the material against my lower legs a bit weird.

I have it in black. I’m 5 ft 6 and I have the regular, which is not as long on me as the pic - defo midaxi, not maxi on me. I got two compliments on it while out shopping the other day (both women I don’t know who came up to me in shops). I was wearing it with chunky boots and a leather jacket).

Wouldn't the wind be whistling round your trossachs?

Robogob · 28/09/2025 18:36

I’m going to buy this on the back of this thread. Please can anyone tell me how it sits on the hips? I’m a pear shaped 14 so thinking of ordering a 16 instead if it’s not a line.

MyPinkTraybake · 28/09/2025 21:01

I love the whole outfit.

I’ll share when I get mine! Ordered a 14, which is usually ok for me in M&S. I’m a rectangle though.

Yes, I do think they’ve styled it well, actually. Will be interesting to see what the skirt is like by itself, and what else it goes with.

Ok, I’ve got it. Hmmmmmm.

I’m not really sure what I think. Going to think about it for a day or so. Will post again when I’ve worked out my thoughts.

Oooh love that, I think I would have to get petite though as looks very long on the model. I am very clumsy so would trip over too long a skirt.

TheOtherBear · 06/10/2025 10:10

Sorry, taken me a while to get back to this thread (not that I think anyone is desperately waiting for me to update 😆).

So - I'm going to keep it (but return the 14 and get a 12 instead, as it's too big on me).

But here are some observations and thoughts if anyone else is looking at it.....

#1 It's incredibly shapeless and doesn't have a waistband. It's a bit like a slip where there's a thin piece of elastic in the top of the material, but no specific waistband (hope that makes sense to people?). The whole skirt folds up absolutely tiny and is a thin scrap of material.

As a result of the lack of waistband, it's not hugely flattering and a bit hard to wear. I couldn't find any tops or jumpers in my wardrobe (of any colour, just as an experiment) where I'd want to tuck them in. It just looked weird, given the lack of waistband. It looked best with chunky short or cropped jumpers where the very top of the skirt is covered. Appreciate this might be very personal to me - I'm a rectangle, so the chunky cropped jumpers made me look more like I have a waist, given they end and the silhouette then go 'in' where the skirt is.

#2 The inner / lining skirt falls in completely the wrong place for me. It falls a bit below the knee, but not enough to be midi length, and is really unflattering on me. I got the tall size (I'm 5'9") and don't want to swap for a regular as the top lace layer wouldn't be long enough (currently falls as a maxi length for me, and I like that).

However, I'm pretty handy sewing-wise, and it looks super easy to make that lining level a bit shorter. So when I get the smaller size, I'm going to shorten it a couple of inches, either to just above the knee or even mini length (plus at mini length, I wonder if regular length jumpers will work better, as I would look more in proportion).

I appreciate those two points sound really negative, but I still just really like it. And even though it's going to need a) a return for the smaller size, b) some sewing to make the lining shorter, and c) wearing it with the right jumper (and probably a belt), and still won't be a skirt that makes me looks the slimmest / most flattering.....I think I'm still going to enjoy wearing it and finding it pretty.

If anyone else is considering it, I highly recommend finding somewhere to try it on before purchasing. Hope that helps!

Thanks OP
I am still dithering about it as will have to be online order. Quite a few Lacey/tulle skirts at M&S 😁

I know, that kind of stuff is right up my street! But bad for my bank balance.

I’ve got it and wore it today. I ordered a 16, but should have got a 14. I can’t be arsed sending it back.

Yes, it has an odd waistband. Very thin. I wore it with a Zara thin wool short sleeved top, black tights, stompy black boots and a Zara faux fur (indeterminate animal) jacket. Brown Mulberry Amberley satchel. I love it. It’s easily “winterised”.

thanks for the thread!

Last month in Italy I noticed several stylish women wearing similar skirts (though less contrast between the hemlines) teamed with camis. Very pretty.
