Do you use a handbag and a tote bag?

I've always been a backpack person but recently finding them very annoying. But I struggle with a handbag as not big enough/if big enough they are too heavy.
I'm considering a handbag and tote situation but am worried I'll never have quite what I want when I want it.
What are your everyday carry situations.
BTW I know this is trivial and who cares , but it's driving me mad. I'm also never going to just carry a phone, I'm definitely more of a lots of eventualities packer rather than streamlined.
I'd be really interested (I know I'm sad) in other people's set ups. Thank you!

On work days I have a cross body bag (varies, but yesterday it was a chocolate brown sling type one from Cos) and a tote bag. The tote is currently a green Christopher Kane one which says “More Joy”.

Tote has - laptop and charger, work lanyard, lunch, cereal bars, whiteboard pens (I’m a lecturer).

Cross body has - pouch that I move from bag to bag with mini hairbrush, face powder, tissues, pen, medication, tampons etc in. Little umbrella. Beanie hat I can stick on if it starts raining. Lipstick of the day. Fold up shopping bag thing for when I don’t have a separate tote bag or if I am out at lunch. Card holder. AirPods. Sometimes a power bank on non work days if I am out for the whole day because my phone is a bit crap battery-wise.

(I tend to keep my phone and keys in my coat pocket.)

I also use a cross body bag for the things I need to have to hand (phone, keys, tissues, bank card etc) and a larger bag (either a backpack or a tote)

I think part of my issue is I'm out long hours and often go to.socail things straight from work. I'm also very busy so the backpack just gets fuller and fuller..
But on the times I've tried a smaller bag, I've found myself in my dead time (commute, waiting for friends in coffee shop etc) with no book/ notebook/magazine to entertain me )
I often don't really go home enough in between stuff to swap bags a lot
I feel a bit like a donkey with always the wrong bag!
