Help me Mumsnet! I have a second date and don't know what to wear!

I need the help of the collective. I went on a lovely coffee and walking date, and now we have a second date arranged at a country pub in the evening. I'd like to dress up a bit, but I'm struggling to know what to wear. Everything I find online either seems far too dressy, or too casual.

For the walking date I wore flared jeans (I poured myself into), and a white lace long sleeved top, which is kind of my vibe.

I'm 50, 5ft 5" and size 14. Boobs and hips. Good legs :)

What do you think of these options

  1. Same flared jeans with a dressier top and heeled boots. Perhaps some dressier jewellery
  2. A smarter dress / skirt and top and heels
  3. Stop stressing and throw on some jeans and a hoodie.

Links to possible outfits gratefully received!

Dinner at a country pub is tricky as it depends how posh it is. Is it a fairly casual place or more of a fine dining gastropub? I think either of your first two options would be fine, as long as you feel comfortable in them. But if you’ve got good legs, show them off! And have fun!

It's not a fine dining gastro pub, it's nice, but not posh if you know what I mean. I think I'm going to see if I can find a skirt to wear with some heels. I haven't been out for dinner for so long that I am going to have to go and buy something!

It's barmy worrying about this stuff age 50 isn't it? I should be able to dress myself by now!

Some great dresses in the White Stuff sale. Shorter length ones could show off your legs. Lots on there you could dress up or down.
I’d search for the pub to see what the vibe is like. Just get something you feel confident in that you’d wear again. Enjoy.

I would stick with the old jeans and a nice top combi!
Maybe something a bit drapey and silky? Mint Velvet are good for nice tops (for me anyway).

As a man, either option 1 or 2 sounds ideal.
Make sure it’s something that’s comfortable and which you can relax in and what makes you feel like you.

I definitely wouldn’t want you to dress too smartly.

Thanks all. This is helping my nerves. I think I’ll go for smart jeans and heels with a nice top. Now for some shopping…

Congratulations, I hope you have fun. Definitely buy something new that you feel great in. You probably don’t want to feel too overdressed and mostly it seems people where I live don’t make much effort at all for pub or restaurant dinners so I would probably go for the jeans and top option.

To make it more date-dressing I’d look for colour and texture - a fluffy jumper in a fit and neckline that flatters you, or something drapey in a soft fluid fabric. Something that looks strokable but still casual, in a colour that suits you. Sezane might be a good place for stylish but with a boho edge? Good luck!

Itisallgoingtobeok · 23/09/2025 15:35

Thanks @forcemultiplied I haven’t ever looked at Sezane, so I’ll have a look. I like the idea of something a bit drapey.
