Engagement party (lunch) what to wear

Help!

I’m going to a lunch to celebrate an old friend’s engagement (second marriage) on Saturday. It’s a surprise women only lunch at a posh pub in West London. Very close to friend but don’t really know the other guests. I live outside London and have no idea what to wear- have also lost quite a lot of weight recently so nothing fits really and don’t really know what suits me.

I’m a size 12 ish on top (big boobs) and 14ish on bottom but still have quite a big tummy. Apologies for ish not quite worked out what fits me!
Advice much appreciated

I'm not sure why you haven't had replies but London is no different from anywhere else really. What would you wear if the lunch was happening in your home town?

Whomanity · 23/09/2025 14:08

Oh, what fun! A nice thing to celebrate in a nice venue.

If it were me, the first things that come to mind would be either:

A fantastically flouncy blouse with brown suede trousers and some well polished loafers or velvet mules.

Or:

A terrifyingly expensive cashmere twin set (current style, cropped to end at the waist) in a lovely colour, with a deceptively simple skirt in a really luxurious fabric, and either leather t bar shoes or knee high boots.

You haven’t given a budget so I haven’t suggested brands, though I have a pretty good idea where I’d want to look.

@Whomanity please tell us where you would look. Your suggestions sound wonderful!

Sunseekingdaffodil · 23/09/2025 15:29

@Whomanity yes please do!

If it were me I'd wear one of these, all of which I own

Colenimo
I have this dress in the green and a deep raspberry pink
Colenimo
with the pink version, a Cabbages & Roses jacket similar to this one
Cabbages and Roses Hettie Jacket
with the green, this Casey Casey jacket
Casey Casey Juliette jacket.
With either dress I'd also wear a Brora Fairilse, buttoned, sleeveless tank and either brown flat laced ankle boots or flat, pointy ballet pumps.

or this Klements dress
Klements and flat black patent pointy shoes or black lace up boots

or this CFCL dress
CFCL with a black Harris tweed waistcoat and flat red patent pointy shoes or black
lace up boots

or this Casey Casey dress
Casey Casey dress with brown laced ankle boots or flat navy pumps and the C&R jacket.

I am aware these are expensive- they are not suggestions of things to buy but an indication of the ballpark style I'd wear for this.

I guess I don’t really know what suits me anymore!

I love the Casey Casey dress but don’t think it would suit me at all (big boobs) but some good food for thought. Thank you

Thank you- I can actually see these things working, so has given me some inspiration

Clearly this will be an exceptionally well dressed lunch! (Which will make it even more fun.) I think you could maybe think more about what you would enjoy wearing, rather that what will ‘suit you’ - you don’t sound problematic to dress.

Just realised you said this Saturday?! I know Net-a-Porter is very swift with deliveries.

Anyhow - if you were going with the big flouncy blouse idea these are the brands I’d look at. (All but the first available at Net-a-Porter.)

& Other Stories
Alix of Bohemia
Doen
Isabel Marant
Zimmermann

For a breathtaking twin set (or just half of one if you or the weather run warm) these are the styles I was thinking of - (you may already have similar in your wardrobe)

& Daughter
Alexandra Golovanoff

Brown suede trousers and very lovely skirts are everywhere. Do you already have footwear, or a decent source close to hand?

I love the twin sets and whilst they may not arrive in time they are good for future.

I also have a flouncy & Other Stories blouse from many years ago in the back of my wardrobe so will dig that out and order a few other things today

Stories are surprisingly excellent on the subject of blouses. (I’ve sometimes suggested them here and been roundly mocked.)
